Five Mustang Swimmers To Compete At NCAA Championships

Story LinksINDIANAPOLIS (NCAA/SMU) – Five Mustang swimmers, one individual and four relay participants, will compete at the NCAA Championships on March 26-29 in Federal Way, Washington, the NCAA announced on Wednesday.

Jack Hoagland recorded the 14th-fastest time in the NCAA in the 400 IM, posting a 3:40.40 during the SMU Invite, to secure his spot in individual events during the Championships. In addition, Hoagland will now be eligible to compete in up to two other individual events he has reached an NCAA 'B' standard in. The graduate student previously reached the standard in the 500 free and 1650 free, giving him the opportunity to compete in the events in Federal Way.

SMU reached an NCAA 'A' Cut in the 800 free relay during the SMU Invite, giving it an opportunity to compete in all relays that the team reached an NCAA 'B' standard in. SMU is eligible to race in the 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 400 medley relay, in addition to the 800 free relay.

NCAA rules dictate that a team can have up to four 'non-qualifiers' at the Championships to compete on the relay squads, and the Mustangs will send Lance Butler, Jack Forrest, Harold Lockhart and Sage Sungail for their relay teams.

Diver Luke Sitz will join the quintet in Federal Way. The freshman has already secured his spot on 1-meter and 3-meter and will look to qualify on the platform during the final session of the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships on Wednesday afternoon.

Last season at the NCAA Championships, Butler, Forrest and Hoagland all competed. Hoagland picked up All-America accolades in the 500 free, 1650 free and 400 IM, along with being an All-America Honorable Mention in the 800 free relay. Forrest joined him on the relay squad that earned the recognition.

The Mustangs placed 18th at the NCAA Championships in 2024, the programs highest finish since 2008.

The 2025 Men's Swimming & Diving Championships will be March 26-29 at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Washington.

Interesting press release. I don't know how all the new rules work, but we have 4 relays qualified so we should have several more guys swimming than that.

I share your aspirations as we restore our Swimming & Diving national reputation. We had magnificent teams in the '60s, 70's, 80's, and early 90's. The introduction of a Women's Team led to similar results and impact for our two signature programs. In my varsity years, 66-68, we placed 5th, 7th, and 5th at the NCAAs.
