DALLAS (SMU) - SMU Director of Athletics Damon Evans announced that Alex Gary and Brian Chepulis will join the SMU Management Team on Friday. Gary will serve as Deputy Athletic Director / External Relations and Chepulis is the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Event Operations. They will start on the Hilltop June 2.
Gary joins the Mustangs after five years as Director of Athletics at Western Carolina. He will work with the Mustang Club on prospect engagement and giving strategies for the department.
At WCU, he was a member of the university's Executive Council and oversaw the department of nearly 100 employees and 400 student-athletes. Gary increased the WCU athletics department budget by 15%, mainly through growth in gameday-related revenue from ticket and sponsorship sales.

Prior to WCU, Gary spent three years as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development at Oregon State University. He also held various roles at Maryland, Michigan and Charlotte. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Virginia Commonwealth in 2005 and a master's degree in business administration, marketing, and management from UNC Charlotte in 2009.
Chepulis will oversee the facilities and event operations staff as well as the management of SMU Athletics' facilities. He will also be involved in capital projects and serve as liaison to the Office of Facilities Planning & Management, Risk Management, IT, Parking, P.D. and more.
He comes to the Hilltop after four years at American University as Assistant Athletics Director for Facilities & Operations. He previously spent six years at Maryland as an assistant director for the Facilities, Operations, and Events office and three years at Towson as the assistant manager for facilities and events.
Chepulis graduated from Towson with a degree in sports management. He earned his master's in sport administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2013.
