Baylor/SMU Rivalry

Postby nc pony » Fri May 05, 2006 9:35 am

saw this posted on the DMN Sports Blog and got me thinking, what is our biggest rivalry in Basketball??

"Doherty livin' large at Luby's"
SMU basketball coach Matt Doherty is taking this city by storm.

But the first thing he has to do is pump life back into the Baylor-SMU rivalry.
I'm hoping our Calvin Watkins asked about this topic while sharing a Luann platter (my favorite is baked fish, mac and cheese, black-eyed peas and jalapeno cornbread) with the aforementioned coach.

It's time to bring back the days of Kato Armstrong and Micheal "Mr. Quick" Williams at Moody. Can't wait to see what the SMU marketing department comes up with for this season.

You could do a V-neck sweater night, but then, that's what everyone on campus is already wearing. Maybe something a little sexier, like John Wesley Night, to celebrate the school's Methodist roots.

(Us Baptists always envied our Methodist pals because they didn't have to attend Wednesday night services, and sprinkling seemed like way less of a hassle than getting dunked).

Please check back later for more Luby's talk...My favorite location is the one at Valley Mills and Bosque in Waco. Used to take dates there, which probably explains a lot of why I struggled in that area of my life.

I once called on on Sefko to kick Mosley in the teeth every time he mentions Baylor. Tell Mosley to get back to me when Scott Drew finishes a year above .500 as a head coach. Not just a Baylor mind you. Ever.

And that post says a lot about Mosley and a lot about Baylor and a lot about Waco.

Oh, he is doing a great recruiting job, for sure. And he is doing an admirable job putting up with the fallout of a mess he did not create. But if you read Mosley's daily "surrogate biased Baylor beat writer" report on SportSay blog, Drew is the second coming of Dean Smith. Which, I think is odd for a coach that got a Big XII job having never finished above .500 at Valpo and had only been HC for a year anyway.

Does he think he's still in Waco or something??

Here in Wilmington, I had to write the editor of the sports section. They had a 2 page article on coaching changes and featured Matt Doherty. Under his picture it said..

" A reader called in following our story because she didn't know what SMU stands for. For that matter, does anyone know where SMU is? Doherty has said this is a destinati0on job, but he will surely leave when the big schools come calling."

I wrote him back saying his "readers are stupid if they dont know where smu is or what it stands for. Does anyone outside of north carolina know what UNCW stands for? NO! He took the job b/c we are a private school with over a billion dollar endowment that pays him well! Tuition is over 30 grand a year (I should know, I went there for my undergrad and law degrees!) PS, he has said its the prettiest campus he's ever been on (over ND, Davidson, and YES, UNC! How about pulling your heads out and gaining a little national perspective!"

Think they'll print that??

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Great stuff, ncpony!

Mosley's just hacked because SMU had three guys (D.D. Lee, Chris McMurtray and holdover Keylon Kincade) at the Cowboys' mini-camp this weekend, and Baylor couldn't produce one guy worth an invitation!

We did have one player drafted and 2 others have signed. Some Kansas fans are swearing we got DA too.

For the most part, getting the good players means that you start winning. Look at places that used to suck, but started winning after they began getting stud players. Washington, Florida State, West Virginia, Nevada, and Florida, to name a few. Conversely, the programs which do not get players start losing. Just look at traditional powers such as Wake Forest, St. John's, Purdue, Georgia Tech, etc. and how those places all struggled this past year.

Baylor is reeling in the players right now like nobody's business. In the last two years alone, there have been something like 8 or 9 high schoolers from the top 100 national lists who have declared for BU. Once these guys are all assimilated into the system, then you should see things take a major upswing for the Bears.
