CHARLOTTE (THE SPORTING NEWS/SMU) – SMU safety Isaiah Nwokobia has been named to The Sporting News' All-America Second Team, announced the publication in a release on Wednesday.
Nwokobia was the heartbeat of the elite SMU defense, being one of two Mustangs to register 100-or-more tackles in the 2024 campaign. Writing its name in the record books, the rushing defense allowed just 100.2 yards per game on the ground, the second best in program history. The mark was good for seventh best in the FBS and tops in the conference. The unit also led the ACC in third down conversion pct. defense (0.330) and in fourth down conversion pct. defense (0.415).
Last season, Nwokobia helped the Mustangs make their first appearance in the College Football Playoff (CFP). SMU clinched the playoff berth after earning an 11-3 record with a perfect 8-0 ACC regular-season mark.
This All-America nod is the 10th preseason recognition Nwokobia has earned. The safety has earned numerous accolades already in the preseason, claiming spots on the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, the Bronco Nagurski Trophy Watch List and the Walter Camp Preseason All-America Second Team.
