NIU Head Coach slams transfer portal

Post by Big Hoss »

The NIU head football coach, Thomas Hammock, had some hot comments about the use of the transfer portal and NIL.

Given the money that is generated by college sports, especially football. I’m all for players using the transfer portal to find a better situation, but something there, I think it needs to be reigned in a bit in my opinion. Seeing players at 4-5 schools in their college career isn’t doing them much good from a long-term learning perspective.

Both of these have moved more control and power to the players, which I think is a good thing for them. It’s debatable on whether they are good for the sport, but the dominoes that fell to lead us here fell a long time ago.

My thoughts... you can portal/transfer one time. You can portal or transfer a second time if you head coach is fired or moves on.

This can only be done if you show progress toward a degree.

Coach's message is impressive and noble, but sadly, it's also wasted breath for so many high school kids.

Him: "Come play for me and learn lessons that will help you throughout your adult life."

Another coach recruiting the same player: "Come play for me, and you'll make enough money that you'll live comfortably for years even if you don't go pro, and if you're a high-profile recruit, you'll make enough that you can set yourself up for life before you graduate college, and in some cases help your family, etc."

Those lessons are important, but the 18-year-olds who hear them will be few and far between.

Maybe there are stipulations attached, but there definitely are players who have transferred more than once:

https://collegefootballnetwork.com/5-ac ... -the-most/

Amos is looking for his fifth college after being a three-star prospect in 2020. He’s about to embark upon his sixth college season and is now entering his fourth trip to the transfer portal.

QB Jake Garcia gained notoriety for attending five (!!!) different high schools, and that has since followed him to college.

Garcia is now looking to join his fourth college program. He started his career at Miami, signing when Rhett Lashlee was the offensive coordinator and Manny Diaz was the head coach. He left after two seasons and transferred to Missouri the following season.

After not attempting a pass for Missouri, he once again tested the portal and landed at East Carolina. Garcia finally earned a starting job with the Pirates, where he struggled, which led to Katin Houser taking over. So, he’s once again on the hunt for his next starting job.

BUS was not describing actual reality but his preferred reality.

Well that's embarrassing. After re-reading that, I see that.
Forgive me. It's early.
Sorry, BUS!
