Women's soccer shuts out Southern, 2-0

DALLS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer team earned its third victory in a row by shutting out Southern 2-0 on Thursday inside Washburne Stadium.

SMU (3-1-0, 0-0-0 ACC) dominated the pitch, outshooting Southern (1-2-0, 0-0-0 SWAC) 27-2 to earn its second shutout of the season. The Mustangs led almost every statistical category, including holding a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks and an 11-0 advantage in shots on goal.
After a flurry of chances early in the first, it was captain Lydia Ungashick who broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute, scoring her first career goal on a feed from Zoe Parkhurst.

SMU continued to force the action offensively and in the final seconds of the half, Parkhurst netted her first goal as a Mustang, extending the lead to 2-0. Parkhurst got free in the box and, in a complete display of effort, pushed a shot just past the SU goalkeeper before falling over the keeper.

Coming out of the break, the Mustangs kept their foot on the pedal, generating multiple offensive opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net.

Making her first career start in net for the Mustangs, Haven Empey-Taylor earned her first career win.

SMU has now recorded 27 shots in both of the team's home games and has yet to concede a goal at home this season.

SMU heads back out on the road, traveling to Lubbock, Texas, to face No. 18 Texas Tech on Thursday, Aug. 28. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. CT and will be aired on ESPN+. It will be SMU's third road game this season.

Thursday's game was the first time SMU and Southern had faced each other.
In her fourth season as head coach of the Mustangs, Nicole Nelson is now 30-20-8 overall at SMU and 92-83-23 in her coaching career.
The Mustangs are now 18-8-3 at home under Nelson.
