Hanging out at the Highland Park Village Starbucks a little after 7:30 a.m. in an SMU polo shirt. Clearly there to meet and mingle with folks, which I found impressive. He even was good-natured about finding that it was a Dukie who was coming up to talk to him, even before I told him the rest of my family were Mustangs and wished him the best.

As a football coach he ought to have asked for the biggest, blackest coffee they had, spit in the pot, then pour it straight in his mouth.

Reminds me of a recent boy scout campout I went on with my oldest son. Now I grew up in middle class Lake Highlands and, even though I went to school at SMU and now live in UP, I'm probably never going to be fully integrated into the McMansion-dwelling, Mercedes-S-Class-driving, self-proclaimed “upper class.” Anyway, the men were clearly split up into two groups: the Mercedes drivers who sipped their lattes (and, at 6pm -- I kid you not -- served hors d'ovres) and those who drove pickups and spent their time at the end of the campout towing aforementioned sedans out of the mud. One man, a long time friend of my family who will remain nameless, made a pot of camp coffee to end all pots of camp coffee. You take a pot of boiling water and dump in two handfuls of coffee. Let it boil for, oh, ten or fifteen minutes. Then add a handful of brown sugar and five or six shots of Tabasco. After a few more minutes add cold water to settle the grounds and pour. Best damned cup of coffee I’ve ever had. Let’s just say the latte crowd didn’t like it.
