Doherty At the Nelson

Postby DiamondM » Sat May 13, 2006 5:09 pm

Saw Coach Doherty in the Gold Grandstands out at the Nelson today wearing an SMU polo shirt. People behind me were talking about him. Overheard several other conversations about him among the crowd. Nice to see him doing some face time.

Incidentally, with respect to DMN coverage, there was a note in the coverage of the Nelson that said something to the effect of "Hiring their new coach must have fired up the Mustang faithful -- lots of SMU gear on the course the last few days.

One thing that will improve athletics at SMU especially basketball and football is more fan support. We need more donors to come back and give money, we need more people to attend the games, Doherty is a confident guy, look for a boost in the seats next year.

This guy is making the rounds. Is this a concentrated effort or is it just the way he operates. Either way, it's good to see an SMU coach out and about pressing the flesh. I hope to see him out so I can give him my best.

i like what he is doing, but this is the easy part. All coaches tend to start being seen less once they start losing. Thats the real job here, to survive after the honeymoon ends. Thats not a knock on anybody just the truth.

Is Phil Bennet's honeymoon over yet?

what do you think? You were one of the ones that wanted him fired here after 0-12 werent you? Bennett might now have turned it around just in time. Even though it was only 3 1/2 years, only a few people were supporting him after the ECU game last fall. He revived his tenure with the wins over Houston and Utep for sure. I'd say his honeymoon ended quickly and he barely survived the rocky times. Hopefully hes out of the woods now and will have a good season this year.

I agree with that but I will be happy with 8 wins with a new QB and a bunch of changes in the LBs and DBs.

honestly i don't think that we will be very good right now just based on the fact that we are still looking for guards next year because 3 of our guards are academically ineligible next year...... give doherty and couple years and things will start to turn around

i don't know which ones, i just know that they failed some classes this year and because of that they can't play next year, so doherty is still scrambling to get guards for next year

I'd heard there were some academic struggles along the way, but I was led to believe that they felt certain the situation could be resolved with a little hard studying in summer school.

Okay, no schollies next year were issued. Three guards ineligible for at least the first semester? Depending on which guards we could go 0 fer December and then spend January with the team getting to know each other. Its gonna be a real ugly year this year!!! And if we waited, we could have had Larry Brown who just go axed by the Knicks.
