Stallion Morning News-New Commitment

Postby Stallion » Tue May 16, 2006 4:43 pm

I was checking Rivals' Texas Hoops on the Jeremy Mayfield kid who decommitted from OU and signed with UAB. He was a non-qualifier out of high school so I knew SMU wouldn't be involved although one of our conference rivals apparently thought he was just fine. BTW UAB also joined the growing list of CUSA to get an BCS Division 1A Transfer by signing an Indiana transfer. Anyway, they list a spring commitment by 6-4 Danny Batton from Woodlands John Cooper to SMU in the 2006 recruiting class. Cooper was apparently ranked as the No. 1 Private School in Texas including SPC(Southwest Prepatory Conference including St. Marks, St Johns Kincaid et al) and Tapps Divisions 4A-6A(which would include the other big state private schools like Bishop Lynch and Dunne et al). He was also named to the All State Team in this Big School Division. All County and Player of the Year in what I would believe would be Montgommery County.

yeah he is listed as a walkon and the No. 134 player in Texas in the Top 150 List-I didn't see that before. I saw him listed in the Spring Commitments List and it didn't mention his walk-on status.

Oak Hill Academy is private, and nowhere near DFW.
There are tons of private schools that crank out good players, not just Oak Hill.
Having said that, you might well be right. I can't find a thing about this Batton guy.

there are not a ton of private schools at least in Texas turning out lots of good players. Gulf Shores is a BB factory. Just an example but I don't think my high school St Mark's which is one of the most prestigious has ever turned out a top Basketball player. Several good Division 1A Football players like [deleted] Blaylock at SMU and the Thorton kids at UT but hardly any top BB Players. Its extremely rare for a player to be able to make the transition from a Texas private school to Division 1A.

Especially when Matt Williams was like 62 in the state in 2005. Who knows he may turn out to be a player, if people will let him. Private schools in general just dont turn out many D1 prospects for any sports, except you know lacrosse and equestrian. (by private schools I mean real education houses, not gulf shores or Basketball Eligibility Academy)

Never heard of the kid but lets take things in context here. Hes a walk-on. He isn't going to be highly recruited or ranked well at all. Thats why he is not receiving a scholarship. If that is in fact the case, we lose nothing by bringing him in. He very well might sit the bench like Redden, Biggers or Dement in recent years. Or considering our new coach is inherriting a team that might have only 6 academically eligible players- he might start for us.

I obviously don't want to see us waste a scholarship on a non D1A talent, but I see no harm in taking a flyer from a winner (although a private school winner) when it costs us nothing. Has anyone found anything on him? Rivals has just 2 little notes about him- one of which gives some praise. keep the info coming guys, I would love to see more as to what type of player he is.

I don't know about that Stallion, when I was in high school (Houston Strake Jesuit '98 grad), we had several guys go on to D-1 schools (this is just when I was there).

Jake Voskhul - UCONN & Phoenix Suns
Michael Leblanc - UCONN & McDonald's AA
Broderick Hicks - Wake Forest
Ed Kargbo - Wake Forest
Sam Adamo - Colorado State
Calvin Murphy Jr - Niagara
David Tompkins - Yale
