Practice facility

Postby Blunt Pony » Tue Jun 20, 2006 11:30 am

This may have already been addressed, but with the new Dedman center up and running, why would we not convert the old Dedman center basketball courts and offices into a practice facility. It is already connected and in place and the new facility has basketball courts to accomodate intermurals. I am sure there is a simple answer to this, I have just not heard it yet.

The new part of Dedman Center is only phase one of the project. Phase two is the renovation of the old part of Dedman Center. Once complete, both parts will be the complete Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports.

I'm bitter too. Why couldn't they have done that when I was in school there?!?!?

I don't want to hear it - My tuition was raised to pay for it, so that it could be opened just as I graduated.

Anyone know the cost to alums to come use the bball courts and such?

Hopefully the practice facility will see better recruiting returns than the hideous monstrosity in Fort Worth.

Otherwise, we surely can count on tremendous player development in the new facility. It obviously makes you better at basketball if you practice in a facility different than you play games.

That is flat out a foolish statement. A seperate practice facility is needed for logistic reasons. It is difficult scheduling ample practice time for 3 D-1 programs that share one court. For SMU to reach our goals of being a first rate athletic program it is a neccessity.

They could build a couple more courts for a lot less than $9-12 mill they are talking about.

This is for recruiting. Just so some of you realize, a practice court has not helped our biggest rival in basketball. Based on analysis, it appears that TCU has begun to recruit less talented players with their facility. Facilities simply do not recruit players.

MC 27, it's marketing, baby. When you have some 18 year old running down his mental checklist of where he wants to go and he gets to facilities, we don't want him crossing us off because ours are "old school". We want Mama impressed, too........

Exactly. I'm being recruited by SMU for academics, and was on campus Monday, along with about 300 others. Instead of having the Cox School presentation in the undergrad buildings, they had it in the brand new Collins building. They took us to see the new part of the Dedman Center - we did not see the old part. They had us go to the club level of Ford Stadium (we did not go inside Moody - as a matter of fact, they took us past Moody as fast as possible). They only showed us the renovated residence halls, etc. Facilities make a difference in recruiting for academics, so it follows that they would make a difference in recruiting for athletics as well.

TCU's recruiting numbers have fallen since they built their practice facility. Our football recruiting has stayed about the same for twenty years.

Some of you may be too young to remember, but when Ford was built we were supposed to start competing with schools like Tech and A&M for players. While Bennett has made some progress, we are not near that level.

Actually Bennett announced at his hiring press conference that he felt he could compete recruiting with Tech, A&M etc.

So you're saying the construction of a practice facility will hinder recruiting, huh?
Good thinking. :?
