Freshman QB Zach Rhodes

Postby westexSMU » Tue Jun 20, 2006 11:10 pm

I wanted to point out that incoming freshman QB Zach Rhodes of New Braunfels, who I have seen play, and was a darn good high school player could be our QB of the future know one is talking about. Consider these facts: Zach completed 55% of his passes and throw 20 TD passes. He rushed for 683 yards and had 8 rushing TDs. He has run a 4.38 40 ! Thats right and benches 310lbs. and can squat over 500lbs. Sounds like a strong version of Ramon Flanagan ? Maybe..... Zach will be playing in the Texas High School All Star game held in August in Austin at Royal Memoral Stadium this year. Last year the game was on Fow Sw. He was also rated one of the Top 10 players in the San Antonio area by the San Antonio Express News.

....that's good because San Antonio rarely has 10 good Division 1A prospects. And BTW 4.38 is a fantasy-never happened.

Yeah, I thought the same thing a couple of weeks ago when I was sitting next to Priest Holmes on a flight to Houston, where he was connecting back to his hometown (San Antonio).

Off the top of my head, there was another QB from New Braunfels who did okay in D1. Kliff Kingsbury.

Scuttlebutt regarding Rhodes:

Rhodes gets red-shirted in a perfect world.
Notwithstanding the chutes and ladders of SMU football, Coach Bennett is impressed by him, as are a number of other coaches. He would indeed be the heir apparent after Willis. But he will not start before Willis anytime soon.

He is agile and straight-line fast, he can throw, and he can run an offense. This is not a comparative statement; he was recruited for these reasons whether we like his 40-time or not.

Right.
Which you know because:
- You know him.
- You've seen him run.
- You've timed him.
- You can look at a guy and tell the difference between a 4.3 and a 4.4 and a 4.5.
- You know because it's impossible that a normally fast guy got a great start in optimum conditions while running in spikes on a fast track and ....

Oh, right - it never happened because you say it never happened. I forgot.

Ok, say rivals is right, they have him at 4.5, still seems darn fast for a qb to me......

Are you talking about the Phil "QB-by-Committee" Bennett? The one that coaches SMU? What about when Willis throws two INTs in a half and gets shifted to linebacker??

I've posted about 7 times on Rhodes at recognized track meets or combines-not even one remotely suggesting he can run a 4.38

[quote="Stallion"]....that's good because San Antonio rarely has 10 good Division 1A prospects. And BTW 4.38 is a fantasy-never happened. QUOTE STALLION His Roster Profile on SMU Football says " a tremendous athlete.... Run a 4.38 40, benches 310lbs./ Squats 500lbs. and has a 33" vertical leap " Considering the numbers, at 6' 2" 205 the guy has got to be considered a good prospect for us. Stallion, I'm not saying Rhodes isn't raw talent right now. That is why Rivals had him a two star, but you have to like the numbers and his athletic abilities. I can tell you this guy could become special.

you are really posting some generalities. Almost all Rivals prospects are 2 stars. A Rivals 2 star means you got a pretty average to marginal player-and that is exactly where Rhodes ranks in Texas recruiting. There were unprecedented numbers of top QBs in Texas last year-Rhodes wasn't one of them-probably not even Top 12-15 in the State. But as we all know sleepers sometimes come through. I'm tired of praying that a whole class of sleepers miraculously become superstars. It is time to expect Phil Bennett to raise the standards of his recruiting classes-especially the last few years.

I agree that PB "needs to raise the standards of the recruiting classes." I was the one who pointed out that Rivals had SMU rated #107 last year in recruiting. However, I personally think in Rhodes case, he should have been rated a 3 Star Recruit. The fact is He is big enough, FAST enough, and has great arm strength. I was only pointing out that in our present QB situation, Rhodes might surprise some people when he gets to school. Hey, watch him in the Texas High School All Star game this summer and see what you think. He will be playing with and against a lot of 3,4,and 5 Star Rival recruits.

Hey, I hedged it with my chutes and ladders comment.
If Willis tosses two pics, Slater comes in. If Slater throws two pics, then Johnson, and if he tosses two, it won't matter because by that point we might be three-four games down in Sept. and Bennett wouldn't be in a position to make that decision. (Not a prediction...just an observation or what would be possible given a set of events).

If Willis makes it through Sept. just managing the offense, I think he will be okay, two pics or no.

I think they should put Phillips at LB right now. They need the help.

Surprised Stallion did not pull out the "he is not 6'4 or above" card. Can't have those short QBs.

It would be interesting to have him at some receiver position with a throwing option. 8)

well don't be surprised if Rhoades ain't 6-2. Rhoades is listed at 6-2 in Rivals but that is unverified. I believe he had a verified height of 6-0.5 at the Scout combine where he ran about a 4.78 Forty-but I no longer get Scout so that is from memory.
