Next Doherty assistant?Found this on Chicagohoops.com:
Matt Doherty And Southern Methodist University Appear Ready To Get Serious About Recruiting Chicago, Add Lance Irvin As Assistant Coach Chicago Hoops June 26, 2006 Email Questions/Comments To [email protected] New head coach Matt Doherty, and Southern Methodist University appear to be ready to get serious about recruiting the greater Chicagoland area, and have added Chicago native Lance Irvin to the staff as an assistant coach. Irvin, who last year coached at the University of Missouri under both Quin Snyder and Melvin Watkins, joins a Southern Methodist University staff that already includes coaching veteran Steve Lutz. Bringing Irvin on board signals that SMU will be looking to be aggressive in Chicago. SMU competes in Conference USA, a conference that in addtion to Doherty, has a pair of high profile coaches in John Calipari (Memphis), and Mike Davis (Alabama-Birmingham). Alabama-Birmingham has veteran Chicago recruiter Tracy Dildy on staff, and Tulane features Benjy Taylor, who also has strong Illinois ties.
Does "Lance Irvin" mean "George Lynch" in Swahili or something? What gives with our new "basketball strength" coach?
Although, having a recruiting presence in Chicago sounds nice at first blush, will the NCAA be happy with a member of the Quin Snyder regime coming into a school that is already under investigation?
Let's not assume guilt by association here. Just because Snyder is a nitwit doesn't mean this guy isn't a valuable coach. Word is he's very well-connected in the Chicago area.
Any idea if/when this would become official?
I could be wrong, and I'll admit to being too lazy to go back and read old posts, but didn't someone say to be careful not to link Tubbs with Sampson just because they were on the same staff? Btw, I hear that despite it's nickname, Chicago isn't the windiest city. It is gray and dreary most anytime between September and January, which come to think of it is the only time I've been there. ![]()
True. In fact, Dallas has a higher average wind speed than Chicago. The difference is that the wind in Chicago comes off the lake, whips through downtown which makes it a cold humid miserable wind. Just send 'da money.
Probably, but that didn't stop some people on this board. Hell, given SMU's silence over why Tubbs was really fired, those people probably still think it was because of his link with Sampson.
IIRC the sleazy stuff Missouri was accused of happened well before Irvin arrived in Columbia (Sept 2005) Snyder came very close to being fired in April 2005 over the allegations. Did not hear of any problems occurring from Sept 2005 on

Yea, it's a complete failure now without DISD ties, might as well give up ![]()
As the resident Chicagoan, this is a great idea. Having SMU and Dallas as an option would be great win/win for Doherty and the BB players. Better yet, schedule Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola, UIC, etc. and then I can see the Mustangsplay , while they recruit in the city.
BTW, Chicago's windy reputation started by the "windy" pronouncements of politicians, not the weather, which at this moment is pretty nice, 70-80's with low humidity. Except for Jan and Feb, I enjoy the climate. Won't wannt to handle the summers in Texas. ![]() Pony Up
I wish more people knew this. As a pilot, it drives me nuts every time I'm asked if it's hard to land in Chicago since it's the "windy" city. ![]()
For 50 of my 56 years I had heard the "politician" reason for the windy city name. Last week I heard a local radio host saying that was not true but it really was referring to the wind based on the cold chill off of Lake Michigan, not wind speed. Now I am so confused I just do not know who to believe.
Well then the last time I was in Hollywood I gave all my money to a young sweet thing on Rush Street who showed me a nice time.
Chicago Rocks.
And besides, suffering Mustang Fans have nothing to complain about, unless you also happened to be a Cubs fan for 55 years. Pony Up
