The one gliche with FordThe game Saturday night was definitely fun to watch, and the atmosphere was quite spectacular. All this talk about bad fans I don't quite understand because it was HOT and many people were there all day and we have a very small student body with a highly diverse population, many of whom probably could care less about football... so I'm not too concerned about that problem.
BUT I do have one BIG problem with the way the sound and PA system was working that night. The sound director or whoever is responsible for playing that obnoxiously scored highlight reel for the 100th time DURING the band's entrance and playing the music clips so loud that the coaches couldn't even get plays in and/or communicate with their players needs to be trained better or get a hearing aid. The band making their first entrance down Bishop and into Ford Stadium was much more significant than listening to the techno-infused advertisements and promotions blaring from the speakers. It was unfortunate we didn't get to hear the entrance, only SEE a bunch of costumed people marching with instruments. And I noticed at one point Cavan screaming and waiving his arms to the press box because he could not communicate with his team, coaches, and officials because of the timing and volume of the PA system. Surely, it's just a kink we'll work out, but hopefully we'll improve on this!!
Re: The one gliche with FordYou are right. I don't know if this is the same announcer as in the Cotton Bowl, but SMU is not used to having the jumbotron. This is something that will get worked out. I did see Cavan throwing a fit. It was bad that he could not communicate, but I was laughing pretty loud watching him. He had some crazy moves and he looked like he was going to cry.

Re: The one gliche with FordYeah, he may have been fixing to cry, but he had one thing in mind, and that was trying to win that stinking football game. I respect him, and all the coaches for that effort. The stadium and all the the hype is great, but there is one main motive, and that is to help this team perform to the best of their ability. I hope he keeps waving his arms, and hollering to help this team keep winning!!
Re: The one gliche with FordThe announcer for the game is Mark Followil from The Ticket, and he did SMU games last year..he is a high school caliber announcer in a college gig because the ticket gave them a discount on their ads on the station. He bites. The band announcer is someone different.
Re: The one gliche with FordNote to BigChief -
Not true. Mark Followill does the radio play-by-play -- he has nothing to do with the public address announcing. The PA announcer is Peter Irwin, and he's the best around. Having said that, Peter has no control over the volume of his mike or over the announcements and ads that blare out of the scoreboard. Peter's announcing is the actual game information, and he's a huge improvement over the previous egocentric guy. Peter is great. "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
... "Hit it."
Re: The one gliche with FordI also think Peter did a great job in the PA booth.
But there needs to be more common sense applied from whoever is responsible for timing the promotional videos and adjusting the volumes. At times it seemed more like the XFL than a college football game.
Re: The one gliche with FordCavan was especially incensed when the jumbotron controller was trying to whip up the crowd while the O was on the field.
It was a very bush league job done in the press box and needs to be improved on. Put the NOISE sign up there when the D needs to make a big stop. And figure out a truce between the NBA Jock Jam stuff and the Mustang Band. The band should get top billing, but the jock jam stuff should be used to give those poor guys a break. Get the scoreboard coordinator for the Stars to come out to Ford and give our boy a lesson or two.
Re: The one gliche with FordEverything is new, just give them a game or two to get it straight! I am sure they will figure it out!

Re: The one gliche with FordIt is pretty pathetic that people today equate loud noise, any loud noise, with excitement. The last thing I want to see happen at Ford Stadium is that we try to become a Stars or Mavericks game. We don't need NBA Jock Jam. We need the fans and the band to make true, real, loud fan noise in support of our team! You do not fool anyone with imitation spirit.
So turn down, or better yet, turn off the NBA Jock Jam. Turn up the Fan yells and claps and whistles. Let's keep it real. Let's keep it a college atmosphere ... not a pro sport thing. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: The one gliche with FordI had quite a different problem with the sound on the east side in the student section. I could make out none of what the PA announcer described. There are no speakers mounted on the east side (presumably because there are no suites to mount them on), resulting in a jumbled sound mass reaching the section from each speaker position at a different time. Couple this with the over indulgence of 'spirits', and you get one very confused student.
Re: The one gliche with Ford
WRONG. But that's another issue. "I think Couchem is right."
