BS. This team lost last year to Baylor, TULANE (post-Katrina, in a game that wasn't even close), ECU, and Marshall in what were supposed to be easy wins. There is no such thing as a free win for SMU. In fact, I suspect one of those free wins you mention may turn out to be a loss, but I hope not.
with a freshman qb who has never played a down, none are a free game

Great point. Those losses last year were wtih two QB's each with two years of JC experience under their belts. Don't talk to me about free wins.

For SMU there is no such thing as a free win anymore. We are one of the worst programs if not the worst program in the country for the past 15 years combined. We can't look past SHS, ASU or UNT. We have no gimmes. Thinking we have any gimmes is what will make us take that big step backwards. If we play to the level that we are capable of playing we ought to beat those three schools and Rice, Marshall, UAB, and Tulane. That's 7-5. If we don't play to our potential, we will lose to someone and this board will be filled with fire Phil posters.

Good lord! I am glad that I have been away for 2 weeks on vacation without access to this mindless argument. Who gives a crap what the predictions are? I know the season is still over a month away but why don't we look at where we stand this year.
We get 3 wins over pathetic opponents. We get to play the same conference schedule that we had last year and you can easily make the argument that every team we play is nothing special and we have a good chance at victory. The only game I am pretty sure we are going to get beat at is the Tech game.
However, I feel that it will be closer than most people think. This team can now score and Willis is an upgrade at QB. He has lived this offense for over 6 years now and nows how to run a spread attack. He is also much faster and more elusive than Romo ever dreamed of. We will see lots of spread option this year. We have quality running backs that are big and fast and an experienced line. We also have big targets at wide receiver and TE. The days of tossing the ball to slow, smurf receivers are gone. Our D-line is what beat up UTEP and Houston. They are back. Sure we need some new linebackers and DB help but it is amazing what a good pass rush does to the ability of a DB.
The offense is what is going to win us games. Martin chewing up yards and Willis throwing to his targets and pulling the ball down to run is what will keep the ball out of the other teams hands. Your defense looks a whole lot better when you win the possession battle. That is why the games against UTEP where we had the ball 8 minutes longer than the opposition. No more 3 and outs. We can grind out 3 or 4 1st downs and actually start playing a decent ball control game. Our red zone scoring will continue to improve as well. There will be no more leaving the D out there to hold things together.
I am not saying we are going 10-1 but look at the crap that we play in CUSA. They are not great and nobody on the CUSA schedule stands out as a potential top 25 candidate. I ain't making predictions but I do expect this team to be better than last year and the schedule just got a whole lot easier.

SMU probably has the fourth best talent level in the West. Also, I do not expect Willis to be an immediate upgrade this year. Anyone who has watched Rhett Bomar, Drew Weatherford, or Kyle Wright know that freshman QB tend to struggle. Yeah, we won't Tech every week, but his first college experience will probably be a 69-10 game.
Willis to slot receiver!

That's the spirit.
Magazine predictions don't mean a thing. How many rags picked us to go 1-10 last year? They didn't know about DeMyron Martin, or Joe Sturdivant, or Adrian Haywood, or .... and we got better. We're going to be better again this year, and just like in recent years, we'll be bigger, stronger and faster (for the most part) across the board.

This is the same QB that PB was seriously considering taking the red shirt off of last year late in the season because he was an upgrade. Common sense kicked in and said get 4 good years out of him, not 3. He is an upgrade and he is a proven winner. Bhomar is a pro style quarteback that had to learn the Sooner offense and get his timing down. Willis is a QB that has played the Spread all through high school and immediately learned our offense. Bhomar was a great talent but it is not like he was a proven winner like Willis. Let's hope that Bhomar is like Troy Aikman and Willis is the 2nd coming of Lance McIlhenny.

Yeah, and so was the chubby guy who quit and went to d-2, and so was the other guy who quit and went to d-2, and so was the bass player, and so was the tight end, and so was the second tight end and so on and so on and so on. SMU develops QBs about as good as Rice develops supermodels.
I hope Willis is everything you claim him to be, but I also hoped the same of all those other guys too.

JT,
Why are you continuing to hurt recruiting by making common sense statements? We probably lost Tray Allen, Emmanuel Moody, and Sergio Kindle because of your posts.
Can I take responsibility for Ronnie Morgan?

Interesting that you only talk about the chubby QB, etc. Do you not think the QB has to depend on the O-LINE and the RECEIVERS as well as field position (defense) too. I hope and pray that these big 'uns and these faster, taller receivers will help any QB we play. I do think Josh McCown would have continued here and succeeded had he not had to run for his life on nearly every down. PLUS we have (hopefully) several good running backs to boot. I truly believe we have improved over those days. IMHO.

I am still sticking by my claim that Martin was a stud, I told everyone who would listen that he was a stud, and at halftime of the TCU everyone was telling me that I was right. I also liked the Haywood kid last year but I was not nearly as vocal as I was about Martin. I still remember one of the sponsors of this board telling me that sure he was good in a spread offense in HS but Martin isn't an every down back. So to make it official I am making a proclamation right here and now:
This is my official "New Stud 'Stang" call of the year. Justin Willis will kick butt and take names. He will throw for 2,500 yards and rush for another 400.
also
DeMyron Martin will rush for 1400 yards.
Also, it is highly likely that Bobby Chase will be stalked by a group of boy crazy 13 year old girls who think he is "HOT!". Unfortunately, this group will be led by my daughter who appearantly has named herself President of the Bobby Chase Fan Club and wants to know where she and her friends can buy SMU jersey's with his name and number.

Yes, but we're throwing out the same personnel as last year in those other positions and our QB position did not exactly shine in leading us to a 5-6 season that included a couple of miracle wins. And Brian T was talking the QB position. All I'm saying is we've had "proven winners" come up at QB in recent years from the lower ranks only to stink it up at the college level, whatever the reason. It'd be nice to see us break that trend.

Who else wants a Six Pack of Sunshiner's Beer? I started drinking it while on vacation and it has me in a good mood. Also, the fact that I am prepping myself to coach the Allen Division 3 Mustangs this fall to ultimate glory or at least a few wins. Nothing like 8 year old boys running the Single Wing to get you over excited about football season.

Do you laugh so hard at your own "jokes" that you don't notice everyone rolling their eyes?
