Recruiting

I will be doing the sideline reporting again this year for the Aledo Bearcats. They have about 4 guys who are definately D 1 players, but one of course is already going to Texas and one is goin to be a junior.

My question is, who should I talk to about helping recruit these guys or atleast get their names to the right person on the coaching staff. I am covering high school games because I want get into broadcasting but also because I want to help SMU get some good players. The coaches can only make it to so many games, so the more eyes the better.

Does anyone currently do this? That is go to high school games and then give their findings to the coaching staff.

If you're an alum, and I gather you are, I'd be very careful of contact with players. Sure, you can talk to them, but there are very particular rules about what you can and can't say. I'd call the athletic department (sports information? maybe an assistant coach?) before saying a word to a player.

And PLEASE make sure you use a plain white envelope. Nothing traceable to SMU.

Your safest bet is to just observe and if you see a good recruiting candidate, pass that information on to the coaches and let them make the contacts and do the talking.

I echo those remarks. If you see a kid who is a prospect, pass that information along to the coaches (especially sophomores and juniors). That is really helpful to them. I coached youth basketball one year and one of the kids was a silly football player. He unfortunately got found ineligible his senior year because of his transfer was not in accord with local high school rules. So, he had no senior stats to speak of and got passed over. I passed his name along to several college coaches I knew and told them he was a good kid and they should look at him (including SMU). Several schools followed up.
