UHaul Trailers

I own two mid-sized sedans. With the hitches available, I am able to only pull 2,000 pounds behind my car. The only trailer they have available to us is 4' x 8' with that weight allowment. I think the total price of that with the move is above $500. Does anybody know of any cheaper options? The amount of space seems sparce for the payment amount. I hate moving. I hate it.

Rent one of the big trucks (much less) and get a tow package for one of the cars. You are in Conn. aren't you? On the map that is uphill from almost everywhere so you should be able to coast wherever you are going.

Thanks Mrydel, I looked into that. I am moving across the country, and my quote on the smallest truck was about 2k. I am going to check with Penske, but I don't think it is that much cheaper.

When I moved back from Seattle to Dallas I rented Penske and towed my Jeep behind on a car dolly. Workded out well, and I recall only paying $1100 or so, but that was a decade ago.

I will say the Penske trucks were much nicer than u-haul trucks.

I am evidently missing something. I rent Uhaul trucks (pretty good size)all the time for $19.99 a day. I understand there is a drop off charge but unless you are walking along beside one you should be able to do better than $2,000. Even the real big ones are $49.00/day. I you follwed my father's way of doing it, you would drive one car to your final destination, and rent the truck there. Drive the truck back to where you are moving from, load up (you do not need a tow set since you drove one car there already) and then you will not have the drop off fee. Lots of driving but the least expensive way to do it.

I too will be moving across country soon and I will be doing the U-HAUL thing. The way I understand it, they screw you based upon where you are dropping the thing off. For example, I've heard if you were to move to Phoenix it might cost you more for a u-haul than a moving company because so many more people are moving to the area than moving out that they have a glut of trailers. Luckily in my case the place I'm moving is not that overloaded.

Everyone from California is moving to Phoenix. Lower housing costs (relatively) and high job growth are the main reasons.
