Keys for the Defense Against Tech (cont from WR's vs. CB's)1. disguise our coverage extremely well
2. keep their short passing game in bounds and don't miss tackles, then their short passing game turns into short runs w/ the clocking running 3. don't give up the big play 4. small and quick LB's can beat their Oline to the holes... gentleman.. the key to our defense is to confuse their young QB w/ Zones that look like man coverage and man coverage that look like zones. we have to make a cover 2 look like a cover 3 and a cover 3 look like a cover four.. that way when he thinks we are in man and blitzing then he will throw the hot route and our LB that is faking the blitz will drop into coverage and walla INT... next don't give up the long ball.. force quick and short passes and turn their passes into short gains in bounds.. that way their passes will turn into a basic running game and keep the clock moving.. now much easier said than done.. yes the wide splits do make it very difficult for the defense, thats why Leach is so very successful.. but we have small and very quick LB that can get to the holes b4 their oger lineman can pull..
Your defensive strategy is sound.
I'd add one thing, though. The defensive front four need to make their QB run for his friggin' life. That guy needs to understand early and often that he stands an outside chance at death or permanent disability if he thinks he is going to sit back there and pick our secondary to death. They need two sacks early with the second coming from a withering backside hit from "Eat at Joe's" Sturdivant. It's a risk, but ring goober's bell a couple of times, and he will know that he is not just "in the game", he IS the game...(pun intended). Time to go huntin'! I still say that if we score more points than they do we can win this game.
Why does anybody bring up the A&M game last year about missing tackles. The reason we gor blown out in the second half, and it was only in the second half is because we suffered from heat exhaustion. A&M were bringing in fresh legs in the second half and guys who made plays all year routine plays couldn't tackle in the second half, that my friends is heat exhaustion. I seem to have heard fans suffered the same fate in the stands that day, imagine being on the field in those conditions.
that is not a good reason... we went in there knowing there wasn't much of a shot to win.. then we played w/ them for a quarter and a half and when we jumped on the goaline and then fumbled that took the wind out of our sails.. it was not heat exhaustion, it was we told ourselves at halftime that we really couldn't compete w/ these guys.. our guys train in dallas and yes its more humid in college station but these guys are college football athletes, they are trained to handle the weather
yes your right i forgot to add, that pressure on the qb is very important.. w/ that line you cannot give the qb all day to throw because they will find holes in the defense... especially if harrell starts.. god if he does i hope we win, b/c he is one cocky SOB..
Well, those nice people in Lubbock are paying good money to sit in those seats; SMU might as well show up and play anyway.
Stallion...you may indeed suggest it. One always wants the fastest and biggest guys one can get, but recruiting them and actually signing them are often two different things. However, in the overall aspect of the game, it is not always a matter of two guys running down the field for 40 yards and see who gets there first. There is so much more involved such as the ability to fake, to cut , to twist, to flat out run over the defender and on the defensive side the ability to read the play and be ready for the runner or the receiver when he gets there. In the A&M game, the biggest problem wasn't that we weren't making the hit...it was that the guy who made the first hit didn't wrap up and once the runner got by that first hit, everyone was pretty spread out which made it hard to get a second hit. We were trying to make arm tackles instead of full body hits with a wrap up. that was due to the affect of the extreme heat, the exhuastion and our lack of quality depth. When the A&M guys went back to the bench, they got air conditioned air flowing down from their pads...we didn't. I have no doubt that A&M had the better team and probably would have won under any conditions, but were it not for the horrendous heat, we would have at least been more competitive.
well that and the fact that when we missed the arm tackles Reggie and the their WRs covered the other 60 yards with their 4.3 speed. They were bigger, faster and stronger than SMU at every position-that's why we got our [deleted] spanked.
It's the chicken and egg problem. We all recognize that our recruiting has been down for years, but it's not going to improve until we win some games. Do most of the teams have more talent than us on paper? Yes (maybe not with this year's schedule, but you get the point). What we need to do is play smart and hard - things we can control, and hope we win some games and start attracting some higher ranked recruits. If we put together a decent season this year with our weak schedule, we might actually have some momentum. I'm not saying we will, but I certainly believe it's more possible this season that it has been in a long time. With all that said, I really hope the guys go out to Lubbock and give TT 60 minutes of hard played football. Let's not skip the game because their recruiting ranking has been higher than ours for the past 20 years.
