No: I think your thinking of SMU where their players get regularly tasered and a student with a 1.9 GPA can attend the institution [a good friend of mine whom was a terrible student, a good person, and has wealthy parents].
Oh, give me a f-'in break! Only ONE SMU athlete has been tasered. And the cop who did it has a history of being trigger happy.
'Regularly' is a BIG stretch of the imagination, Froggie.

Talk to me when the cop doing the tasering isn't responsible for half the taser incidents in Dallas PD history (I know it was some outrageously high number like that)

Let's be perfectly honest. The SMU coaching staff would
wee-wee in their collective pants if they thought for one
delusional moment that Bomar or Quinn would consider
giving even the slightest thought of coming to SMU. The
Ponies have been turned down more than "Charlie The Tuna".

Maybe I am naive but I really don't think Coach Bennett would take Bomar. After listening to him speak to students and parents about character, I really thinks he believes in it. Bomar has a history of being the spoiled golden-armed QB.

I just added this to the memo I intend to give to my son about not attending TCU.

Corp? Are you an Aggie?
I'm copying & pasting a post from another thread in the Football forum in response to your post. I think it sums up pretty well what Bennett and his coaching staff's response would be:
In answer to questions about OU's recent problems and how he approaches it, Bennett said this at media day Saturday, Aug 5:
"I think, number one, being in the metroplex, we have to do a good job, and especially [with] our history."
"We are constantly ... talking about the choices that [our players] make. Unfortunately, they're still 18, 19, 20 years old. Whether it's OU players or SMU players or Texas A&M, these young men are impressionable, whether you like it or not. It doesn't mean they're bad people, ... but we try to educate them, constantly, about the things that are out there that can cause them to lose the opportunity to play here."
"As I tell [the players], and I say this laughing, there's NOTHING that they do that I don't find out about. I'm worse than their ex-girlfriend."
Bennett gives players a 'THINK' card, to carry at all times. It says: *Is this right or wrong? *Is this a risk I can afford to take? *How will it affect my future? *How will this affect my team, my coaches? *How will this represent SMU?
Bennett said when players got into trouble on Greenville Avenue earlier this year, he received a call from them in the middle of the night.
"They felt comfortable enough to call me, because they knew the situation was out of hand. And I was there within fifteen minutes."
"I'm not saying that I don't have kids that make mistakes. They do."
"It's not a right, it's a priviledge to represent SMU and to try to do what we're doing."

Pot meet kettle. Kettle meet pot.
Not sure who is giving you a hard time about the DP. I've never seen a bunch of TCU fans on here ripping SMU about the DP. We had the living DP which was barely a step above where SMU was. Plus, we went a stretch of 30 years without back-to-back winning seasons. We certainly can relate to being down for an extended period of time.
Regarding Bomar, if the coaches are comfortable with it, then so am I. If he came out and said he wanted to look at SMU, then I believe a lot of you would say the same thing. It might sound like this..."Bennett is a good guy, he will look into every detail of the situation and then he'll make a decision based on the facts in front of him and the character of the player. We should trust his judgement." Plus, we need an experienced QB when we open at UT in 2007!

I am going to ask this again, because I am serious. Isn't a coach openly expressing interest in a student-athlete to the press or a school issuing a press release expressing similar interest a violation of NCAA rules? It isn't about TCU, because I thought the same thing when A&M Commerce sent its press release.

TCU was allegedly first contacted by Bomar's parents, so they could confirm that he was coming for a visit.

Look at pg. 10, it is PDF so I could not just paste it.
Here is my understanding of the process:
1) You decide to transfer
2) The A.D. gives you a permission to contact letter.
3) If they do not give you permission to talk to other schools, you can appeal the decision.
Because Bomar was kicked off the team, I would assume he was granted the ability to contact other schools. It appears to me that the impetus is on the athlete to contact schools, which is not how I would guess it works in practice. If he has received that letter, I doubt there is anything technically wrong about talking about the player. It does seem to go against the common practice though.

Here is the Coaches Football Recruiting Guide.
http://www.ncaa.org/library/membership/ ... _guide.pdf
With a transferring student, a coach is allowed publicize that the school is interested in the player. (pg. 13) They are not allowed to state the expected contributions. It appears that Coach Patterson is within the rules.

I thought he needed NCAA approval before he could transfer. If he can not transfer yet then he is not eligible to be contacted.

Mrydel,
I think his grades are fine. His first step would getting the permission to contact letter from OU's athletic department.

According to ESPN.com, he became ineligible as soon as OU dismissed him for NCAA rules violations. He must appeal to the NCAA to regain eligibility.
