Bad news for DMN

Postby DickerJames » Tue Aug 08, 2006 10:51 pm

Word is the DMN needs 120 employes to take their buyout offer, with 30 expected to come from Sports Day.

We can only pray it's from the UT beat. I've always had the impression they've got at least 40 people working on covering the Longhorns at any given moment.
Just my two cents.

If they were down to two guys in DMN Sports:

one would stare a fax machine waiting for UT releases, the other would surf the net looking for cool photos of Vince Young.

It is probably one of the worst run newspapers in the country. Whenever I say that they should cover local teams, people always say things like they cover UT to sell more papers. Sure seems to be working good!!

Don't forget about the circulation scandal either, I guess all of the made up names on the list were UT fans!!

When the DMN finally gives up, wonder if we can get the Star Telegram to hang its shingle on our scoreboard?

With the circulation scandal, why were we not shamed into doing it already? You know, like the Astros and Enron Field.

We think alike. One of my friends, a fellow critic of the size and style of Ford Stadium, wanted Ford to be named "Bill Clements Memorial Stadium."

He wanted to name the stadium after the hockey announcer?

I still laugh about your post about fearing for your car after going to a Burn game.

I'm glad we decided to name it after the 38th President rather than a hockey announcer.

The 120 number and 30 in sports day both sound a little high. I have heard that the newsroom is made up of about about 485 employees including editors, writers and administrative staff.

The talk is they want to get it to about 400. The rumor is they are going to offer a base $ and then add a week's pay for every year they were there. Medical is ??? They want all decisions known by the end of August.

But then, credit horrible leadership from Jim Maroney, who has decimated its credibility. The circulation scandal, the $40 million cue cat flop and not investing in local news like they claimed they were going to do. Maybe he should take the buyout. Sorry, he's married to one of Robert Decherd's daughters. But Decherd was given a $475,000 bonus in the first or second quarter -- at least that's what I thought I read in the Observer.

There's a rumor that Fraley may take it.

All of the sports people can go--save Calvin. They need a makeover dedicated almost entirely to local teams.

Calvin could go ahead on... and take Rachel Cohen with him (among others)

not that many

Postby Throwback » Wed Aug 09, 2006 11:56 am

SportsDay has a staff of about 90-95, I remember reading when they laid a bunch of people off two years ago. If they take 30 out, that's 1/3 of their staff going away. No way they can run the sports as we're used to seeing it with 60 people.
So, don't believe the hype. SportsDay will have its share of people leaving, but 30 would be ridiculous.

Then again, they might shrink it down to 30 people, and then just run all the press releases from the UT Sports Information Dept. to fill in the rest.
I'm old school, and can't help it.
