from the Dallas Morning News, Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006 edition:
By BRIAN DAVIS and RANDY JENNINGS / The Dallas Morning News It's a priority for dismissed Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar to enroll at another school before fall term begins, his father said Wednesday. "Rhett needs to be in class, that's the No. 1 thing," Jerry Bomar said. "Then we'll worry about football. He's a 3.0 student, and he needs to stay on pace to get a degree." Bomar spoke publicly for the first time since Oklahoma dismissed his son and teammate J.D. Quinn last week after a school investigation revealed the players took money for work they did not perform at a Norman, Okla., car dealership. "He didn't murder anybody, commit a crime (Note from MM65: It's called 'theft', isn't it? But I could be wrong.) or anything like that," said Bomar, who coached his son at Grand Prairie. "He used bad judgment. But he made a mistake, and he's got to be punished. "But this is America, and I think he deserves a second chance." Rhett Bomar will make restitution for the money whether the NCAA requires it, and his parents will not give it to him, his father said. ESPN.com reported last week that Rhett Bomar received $18,000. But Jerry Bomar said that figure was too high, as did two university sources. The actual figure may not be known until OU completes its investigation. Jerry Bomar said he knew his son had a part-time job but not that he had taken improper payments. Rhett Bomar is examining his options, his father said. It could be months before the NCAA Committee on Infractions determines whether the school or players should be punished. Jerry Bomar would not say what schools he and Rhett are looking at. Divison I-A members North Texas and Houston and Division II Texas A&M-Commerce reportedly have expressed interest. Rhett Bomar has also visited Sam Houston State, university spokesman Paul Ridings said. The Huntsville, Texas, school has a history of accepting I-A transfers. "We know he's out of Division I-A for this year, and we think he could play Division II now," Jerry Bomar said. "But then there could be penalties on top of that. It's just all going to depend on what happens with the NCAA." Bomar also said: •His wife, Suzi, lost her job with an insurance company after the incident "because it would be hard for someone named Bomar to sell insurance in Oklahoma." •A Major League Baseball team last week expressed interest in Rhett, who was District 8-5A's player of the year in that sport as a junior. Jerry Bomar would not identify the team.
If someone is dumb enough to give you money for doing nothing then that is their problem. Definitely wrong for an NCAA athlete, but not theft.
