Florida State Puts SMU on Colonial Classic Tournament Slate

Postby MrMustang1965 » Thu Aug 17, 2006 6:46 pm

*Florida State will play host to McNeese State in the first round of the Colonial Classic on Nov. 12 at the Donald L. Tucker Center and play six games in the month of November. The Seminoles game against the Cowboys marks the earliest season opener in school history. The earliest season opener in school history prior to the 2006-07 season came in a 65-53 victory over Rice on Nov. 14, 1997. With their early opener, the Seminoles will tie the school record for games played in the month of November - they also played six during the 2004-05 season. Florida State did not play a November game in the first four years of the programs history and did not play games in the month of November on a regular basis until the 1976-77 season.

*The Seminoles play host to the Colonial Classic as they entertain McNeese State, Illinois State and Southern Methodist in a three-day, two-games a day exempt tournament in the Donald L. Tucker Center. It marks the third time in the last four seasons Florida State has played host to at least two games in an in-season exempt tournament. The Seminoles hosted two games during the Pittsburgh Holiday Hoops Classic during the 2003-04 season and two games in the Corpus Christi Caller Times Challenge during the 2004-05 season.

*Florida State plays host to Illinois State of the Missouri Valley Conference to in the second round of the Colonial Classic. It marks the second time in the last four seasons (all under Leonard Hamilton) the Seminoles will play a team from the MVC. The Seminoles defeated Wichita State in the first round of the 2004 NIT (March 17, 2004; 91-84 in 2OT) to advance to the second round of the event.

*Florida State plays host to Southern Methodist from Conference USA in the third round of the Colonial Classic. The Mustangs are coached by former North Carolina head coach Matt Doherty. He coached the tar Heels from 2001-2003 and had a 2-1 record against Florida State in the Donald L. Tucker Center.

Nope - this is a chance for Coach Doherty to get a little national attention while upping his record against the 'Noles to 3-1.
