Dear Rusty,

You said this year's team could run 100% of your playbook. How about letting them run more than 10% of it in a game?

Sincerely,

TGR

That "as soon as his boss lets him" thing is wearing then. He is responsible for calling the plays. He either has the ability to call his own game or he ought to quit. .

Dear Rusty,

I think you're name is getting more appropriate for your graying hair.

If you were calling the plays against Tek, then you were just playing it
safe to run as much clock as possible. Maybe Pfil Hasbennett's defense
might get out of there with an under 50 score by Tek. IF Pfil was calling
the plays, then maybe Hasbennet is really his name. If not then U R
getting OLD, and RUSTY, Rusty.

If a YOUNG head coach named Hayden Fry hadn't taken the time to look
at a track star named John Roderick who hadn't played much football,
and played him for the first time against the #2 ranked NAVY
Midshipmen, then a very valuble moment, and WIN in Mustang football
history would've been lost. With a lot of crazy end arounds, and other
antics by Roderick, the probably 28 point underdog SMU beat #2
NAVY 32 - 28. Hayden Fry wasn't scared of LOSING HIS JOB, didn't
play it SAFE, and tried everything he could think of to beat his
opponent.

When Pfil said during the week before the game that he was going to
look at both QBs, it sounded like an NFL coach before a pre-season
game. Doesn't count, we're just playin this one for practice. With Willis
9 - 16 with no interceptions, and leading rusher to boot, SOMEBODY was
just playin it SAFE! Chuck Hixson started his first game as a sophomore
in his first college game as a heavy underdog against Auburn, and went
crazy for passing completions, and yardage to win 38 -27.

9 of 16 completions for 68 yards by your starting QB in a spread
offense IS NOT TRYING TO WIN!!!!

Lotsa Luck, (We're gonna need it)

Nice point. Last year, we had nothing to lose and it got us 5-6. This year, people are expecting a bowl game and Bennett & Co. have confirmed this expectation. We could be in for some pretty boring offense this year (which could in turn actually doom us to a sub-.500 season). You just gotta love Mustang Mania! Thankfully, it's a disease that only affects 45 people or so a year.

Coach Burns was right to go with the conservative game plan. We had a brand new QB in Willis, two new offensive linemen and were facing a hostile crowd and an explosive opponent. I assume he won't open up 100 percent against UNT, either, although it certainly will be more wide-open than it was in Lubbock. UNT is no Texas Tech, but you have to bring a young QB along -- even a talented young QB -- you can't just kick him in the deep end, where a few mistakes could cripple his confidence. Willis doesn't seem like he lacks in the confidence department, but all young QBs need to experience a little success. Coach Burns took the right approach, and will open things up as the season goes along.

Could have thrown safe passes to those heralded TEs couldn't he?

Yes. If TE's are supposedly a strength of this team, can somebody explain why we never throw to them?

Playing to our strengths would be just what our opponents expect. We're trying to catch them off gaurd.

TCU with a redshirt freshman who wasn't even prepared to start let their new QB throw it all over the field. He won the game. I'm a little bit in between. The play calling was much too conservative without question if you actually were trying to win the ballgame. Tech is going to score 30-40-50 points per game. I'm not surprised though.

What I don't understand is how Rice can put in a new offense and score 30 in their first game, but here we are a couple of years down the road still unable to make first downs on a regular basis. I understand that they scored that 30 against Houston, but Tech is not exactly a defensice powerhouse. We've only managed 30 or more points 4 times over the last 3 years. I don't think anyone would say Rice has more talent, so what is holding us back?!?!

The #1 thing that jumps out to me is the play calling.
