Pony Practice Yesterday

More SMU practice stuff

After some good pork chops and green beans at the SMU luncheon, it was off to practice. Here are some notes:

• DE Justin Rogers picked off a short pass from QB Justin Willis.

• Coach Phil Bennett was yelling at rover Tony Hawkins to play the run, instead of the pass, during a full scrimmage against the scout team.

• There were a few drops from the receivers, which prompted receivers coach Larry Edmondson to tell the wideouts to do some pushups.

• Bennett talked to the team at length after practice about picking up the intensity and forgetting about what happened against Texas Tech. It was a loud talk.

• As usual, the Chase brothers, wide receiver Bobby and tight end Vincent stayed after practice to work on their timing and catching ability.

• At least 16 players had to do a conditioning drill, called up-downs, for a disciplinary matter.

• Bennett said it was a good practice.

Thanks for local coverage of our local University. The Ponies are getting better, and I appreciate the updates.

As a Tech fan, I was impressed with Justin Willis on Saturday. I think SMU has a bright future with him as the QB. Good luck to the Mustangs the rest of the way.

SMU practice

Earlier in the day, SMU coach Phil Bennett said the coaches had DeMyron Martin thinking too much when he approaches the line of scrimmage.

Martin, who rushed for 30 yards in the loss to Texas Tech, had no comment when told about Bennett's comments.

Martin, the Mustangs' leading rusher last season, said he's a little angry with the lack of production in the running game. SMU rushed for 118 yards against Tech, with starting quarterback Justin Willis leading the team with 39 yards rushing.

Expect SMU to pass a little more this week against Texas Tech. One of the things you should see is some quick slants from the receivers that allow them to go one-on-one against defenders.

Recievers doing pushup because of dropped balls. 16 players doing "Mustang Reminders"!!!! Bennett having to remind his players to pick up the intensity! Not to give the doom and gloomers too much ammunition but this doesn't sound like a focused team trying to improve and win. I only hope that there is more to this than is reported.

I think that time might more wisely be used on introducing Justin Willis and Corey Slater to their TEs and Inside Receivers.

With us, "short pass" is redundant. We don't have any routes over 5 yards.

Alert system is somewhere between blue and red

For UNT the alert system is somewhere between blue and red. For SMU it is only green.

Sounds like they will have DeMyron thinking about thinking too much.

Seriously, you have a lot of time to think about finding holes when there aren't any.
