Weak suggestion. How about if we get a punt block or special teams screwup (which will happen) then we can do it.
I sat there at UNT with my mouth open thinking, "oh god they're gonna score" when I saw that punt blocked.

What exactly does a special teams coach bring to the table that can prevent blocks...
They tell the punter to punt faster than the coach? They tell the blockers to not get burned...better?
One of you 35 advocates for a ST coach -- please tell me why they are a difference maker... ST coaches are usually worth their salary to improve the fundamentals of your specialists -- anything beyond that can be done by watching tape and reading the For Dummies series.
Our KO team is 75% touchbacks and 25% stops inside the 15. Our PR team has muffed a ball and caught balls too deep. Our Punt team had a huge game at TT and have an off week and all of a sudden we need a ST coach?!
Don't make me bring up our kickoff return team who are probably way, way up there nationally.
Oh...so it seems we need an ST coach because we get punts blocked and botch every 200th PAT...both just so happen to appear in the "rock bottom" UNT game.
Just stop.

Why don't you stop, Sunshine? I'm sure in your world, everything is just peachy in Ponyland. We're "this" close to making a comeback, going 8-0 in conference and going to the Spectacular Bowl, right?
Well, things are not so bright for the other 49 people who have been waiting for this season to begin for the last 8 months. So stop [deleted] just because some of us are venting.
I'm guessing you are the family member of a player, am I right? Every year we have one or two of you who get mad when those who have been here waiting forever for some crumb to be thrown our way get pi$$ed when our season goes in the toilet the 2nd week in September. Good theory. We can save money by getting rid of the whole coaching staff and just telling the kids to score on offense and stop the others when on defense. No doubt we would be undefeated without pesky coaches gettng in the way. We can expand it to the whole school. Get rid of the profs and just tell the kids to think get an erector set if they want to be an engineer or watch Perry Mason to be a lawyer.

Mrydel, I'm with you on this post.
It is ridiculous to argue about the need to have a coach responsible for special teams, especially considering our erratic performance in this area.
In additiion, our punter is a talent-- why are we asking him to kick FG & PAT when there are others on the sideline who had great HS careers in exactly that area of kicking?

let's see the teams with the best special teams in the country-there are 3 consensus teams-Texas, Virgina Tech and Florida St. Check out the winingest coaches in NCAA Football during the last 10 years and they are all - just guessing Top 5.

Don't forget you are the one who comes back 20+ years and more than likely gives up on the administration, coaches and players on a 5 year interval. It bothers me how you can be devoted to a "downward spiral" that is SMU football and yet continue to rip people who defend it. Support the team, support something. Your posts have just become sleep-deprived, intellectually challenged, blindfolded verbal attacks. They aren't needed, they won't help, but, unfortunately, you blend in with everyone else and feel like you're being heard.
The high end programs do have special teams coaches because they can probably attract and hire the ones who can make a difference -- like spending $50k a year to bring in a former P/K to coach the P/Ks. The best ST coaches are specialist coaches or the ones with the best athletes for their schemes. Our Kickoff Return coach through 2 weeks has created 3 great KO returns out of 3/4. Whoever it is is obviously not a ST coach, but nobody talks about the genius creating those holes for Jessie to run through. Or is it just maybe Jessie is an All-American returner and can FLY through small holes? The schemes used (minus the gate) are the same schemes you see every other team use and run. The difference? athletic talent and speed. UT blocks punts and doesn't blink....SMU doesn't block punts. Why? Well they have a ST coordinator so it must be the scheme...
No. It's bigger, faster players creating holes and running through them faster. On kickoffs....run down the field, blow through people, make a tackle. In the middle of that you decide where to kick the ball, and what people need to run zig-zags around the others to throw off KO return schemes. PAT...lean in and block and get the kicks off quick. Punt is the same damn formation minus stupid Aggy gates and scrambling to the flat punters. FG block -- uh...run and jump?
Christ. I should be a ST coordinator. Hire me.
I'll be accountable. That way, when we have slower athletes and smaller players, it can be my fault that I can't coach them to run faster and block harder, punt faster or wave a fair catch. Accountability is a scapegoat for a lynching when the inevitable arrives. Hell I think we should have a ST coordinator to defer the nonstop crying about ST that goes on here.

Mrydel -- I can't even follow your post. Speed, agility, size, etc. are the problems with our ST play, not schemes. Those intangibles are not fixed by the ST coach. They are fixed by recruiting and success...but that's an entirely different Pandora's box. Rephrase for me exactly how from that you can draw a theory of fire all the coaches?
