DMN Blog Martin Will Not Redshirtmore accurately will not attempt to get a hardship year since he already has redshirted. But Bennett says they plan to play him when healthy.
That's interesting.
Isn't it a bit premature for the FB program to make such a statement not knowing how quick this particular injury may heal? Given that Martin is already nursing tendonitis in a knee(s), how will a power RB get back to full speed in 4-6 wk? Although getting a "Hardship Waiver" is not automatic, I hope this talented young man is not forced back to play too early, running the risk of ending a career that shows such promise. YOU WANT THE TRUTH? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Although ncaa rules are constantly changing, last I knew the medical redshirt ONLY applies when the player has not participated during 'that' season. I earlier wrote of "Medical Redshirt" NOT "Medical Hardship Waiver"-- so, maybe the coaches are playing semantics with the statement that they will not apply for a Med Redshirt.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe if you've played less than 20% of a season, you are able to request a Medical Hardship Waiver. I'm sure there are other rules & guidelines, but that's the basics as I understand it. YOU WANT THE TRUTH? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Technically, there is no such thing as a medical redshirt. Martin is eligible to apply for a medical hardship waiver, and at this point he would probably get it. The cut-off in football is the 3rd game, or 3 of the first 5. If he hasnt played past our third game, or in 3 of the first 5, he's still eligible. If he plays at all after the 5th game, its done.
Contrary to what Bennet told people last year, Tony Eckert was never eligible for a hardship waiver. When he played in the 4th quarter against Tulane he was past the point of no return. Martin is still eligible. Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
Anyone know the rules about what players are eligible to apply for a sixth (medical redshirt) year?
I assume it has to do with the number of downs/games played, but I don't know the specifics. Thanks
Check with our ol' pal Ramon Flanigan. He should be in a good mood to answer any questions. He played about 12 years for us, didn't he?
a student-athlete may apply for a additional year of competition for reasons of "hardship"
the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests or dates of competition or 20 percent of the institutuions scheduled contests
Sounds to me like Martin would be eligible to apply. Take care of that foot, and come back strong.
