The Only Man for the Job: JIMMY JOHNSONThere is only one man for the S.M.U. coaching job: Jimmy Johnson. He has: (1) the aura of a great coach, especially in Texas and the Southeast where the best recruits would come from; (2) the contacts to recruit successfully; and (3) most important, the toughness and the meanness to make even a mediocre team into a nearly great one.
Sure, it will cost $$$$ to bring in J.J. but we already pay Bennett nearly half a million, our ticket sales would skyrocket and we could get into a bowl -- all of which could offset or nearly offset the cost at some point. I HATE the University of Texas!
guys...guys...guys....the SMU HC job is a football coaching graveyard. NO big time NAME stud is going to come here, forget it, sorry to lay that fact on you. Recruiting restrictions must be freed up and we need to bring in a super salesman, young guy...period. Spurrier, JJ, Bowden, Charlie Waters, Bear Bryant's brother in law, Ara Parsegean's friend, those guys are not coming...
...and by the way, don't you think J.J. would relish in upstaging Jerry Jones on the Dallas football scene?
I HATE the University of Texas!
On the contrary, Waters was pleased that his name was thrown around during the last HC search. He would be a natural fit for the area and recruiting, and heck, we could get some former Cowboys (Staubach) to market their current companies around the stadium.
Don't start this again. He has never been a head coach, and he's been out of football for years. Have you heard him on the radio broadcasts of the Cowboys games? Granted, it's his on-air delivery, but he sounds like he's never seen a game in his life. Yes, he obviously knows the game, but recruits don't remember him, their parents do.
I am with you Mustang. If we can get Jimmie, I am for it. All these other guys are for hiring a highland park high school football coach, or staying with our great recruiter, ultimate fighting champion, Phil Bennett. If the price is right Jimmie will come or if not Jimme someone of his stature. So the question really is, how commited is SMU to having a winner. I am not for replacing Bennett with another no name Bennett type. Either SMU spends the cash and gets a First Class Name guy or we hire Billy Bob Thorton from Friday Night Lights and watch another 4 years of failure. Be carefull though Bennett fans - it is very possible that if SMU continues down this path of mediocracy and the fans allow it, SMU might just move down to D-II or D-III and then we are in a world of S#$@.
I don't agree that the SMU HC is a coaching "graveyard". There are still a lot of coaches who remember the glory days of SMU football and know its rich tradition and history and would love the challenge of restoring the program to its former glory. But it takes a certain kind of coach, the likes of a Lou Holtz who went to Minnesota, Notre Dame, South Carolina, etc. when they had fallen on hard times and made them winners again.
I think J.J. and Holtz are two of the best coaches around, and they would be my first two choices. However, there is one other guy who is an excellent coach and still has some following in Texas: Fred Akers. He was nicknamed "Not Ready Freddie" by UT fans when he was HC from '77-'86. Three times in those years his teams were in position to win national championships on New Years Day. I HATE the University of Texas!
...this coaching "suggestion box" is turning into a bad Sienfeld episode...funny, funny stuff..basically, you guys are clueless.
Clueless? I'm sorry but I refuse to support a coach or sytem that allows SMU to lose to a Community College. I think North Dallas is a good place to draw the line. Oh nice idea on the Mustang Maniacs. Look, You could hire the the best marketing consultant in the world but I am not sure how you spin losing to Community College. Sorry but winning fills seats not slogans like "new turf, new team".
OK, so you obviously ARE just flaming, because nobody could be so stupid as to think anyone here is supporting Bennett. Can we get a ban?
I support Coach Bennett, and will as long as he is our coach. As to this Jimmy nonsense, he's in his 60s, sitting on his boat in the Keys, drinking a Heineken, and making a fortune in advertisements and his occasional network deal. He's have to make more than the entire SMU athletic department to even answer the phone. There isn't enough money in the world to make him undertake what he would see as a rebuilding job.
I suggested Jimmy Johnson to Chuck Cooperstein a few years ago.
Coop said there's no where to keep Jimmy's boat around here. Hardy har har. H*ll, we'll extend the Houston ship channel up here. Rick Perry would help us out. That would be the hire to do it, though. No question. Won't happen, but it would be cool as h*ll. It's GOT to be a NAME. Money talks. Time to think big or we are screwed, buddy. Shock and awe, or forget it. We've been building for 20 years now. Price had mucho baggage. Took him a year and UTEP is a respected program ..... Terry Bowden. PAY the man. Don't have the money? Look in the stands Saturday.
I don't think we can get Jimmy, however the line of thought is a good idea. Ex-NFL guy looking for something to do i.e. Mariucci, Dom Capers, ect. Or a hot NFL coordinator, Russ Grimm.
Or we go the wayward coach method, with Neuhisel or someone similar.
I know it won't happen......BUT
If we get crazy and decide to hire just anybody I say hire Mike Singletary! Singletary is now a San Francisco 49er assistant coach. I would think Singletary would command respect, be a name alot of people in the press and high school coaches around the country would know. I hear he is a good speaker. Mike Singletary is from Texas, played college football in Texas and he would present the right clean cut image for SMU. He is the right age and would probably take the job. Plus he would be the first African American Head Football Coach at SMU which couldn't hurt with recruiting some of the local Dallas kids we are losing to other schools. I bet parents and potential recruits would be impressed with Singletary's Super Bowl Ring and his NFL Hall Of Fame honor. Again....I know it would be too risky and won't happen. ![]() ![]() C-ya @ Milos!
