Fans in the stands

Postby Sam I Am » Mon Sep 18, 2006 5:20 pm

17,000+ fans in the stands for the home opener after two losses. How many were from SHSU? What are the likely attendance projections for the rest of the season? SMU has to win two battles: beat the team on the field and beat the minimum attendance standards of the NCAA. Of course one does affect the other. Just as a comparison, note that USM at home had 31, 748 for their game with NCSU on the same night we played the Bearkats.

I'd say 1,000-1,500 were SHSU fans.

re: beat the minimum attendance standards of the NCAA

Are we in jeopardy any time soon
of some kind of NCAA sanction because
of our aweful attendance?

I think I read in Orsini's bio that he greatly increases
attendance very quickly at every place he has been.

I was disappointed that SHSU didn't have more fans in the stands on Saturday night. I was truly expecting at least 4,000+. Believe it or not, a lot of 'Kat fans are holding on to their $$$ for the U.T. game on Sept. 30.

They better hold them. Betting them would be a mistake.

Bare stands photo

Insane Posse, was your empty stands photo taken at the SHSU game? Where were the 17,000 fans? Where they dressed as seats again? Sorry to hear that SHSU didn't bring many fans. But if it hadn't been for them, we mgiht not have made our minimum of 15K to pelase the NCAA.

That is an old picture. The new turf has FORD STADIUM logos next to the SMU in the endzone.

And folding field goals, and a non seperated strip on the sidelines, etc etc...

And that pic is from pre-game. Yes I know it sounds pathetic to only have that many people there 15 minutes prior to the game, but with the Blvd 100 yards away, most people take their time getting into the stadium. I wonder if that was the less-than-5000-fan Hawaii game from a few years back. What a miserable day that was.

15,000 is an average - in no way are we even close to having a problem there - find something else negative to harp on about.

I thought they repealed that rule last year, anyway. It was never enforceable. The main concern with attendance is the revenue stream, or lack thereof. There wont be any problems with the NCAA.

My understanding is that they amended the rule to allow tickets sold to count as "attendance" to protect some of those, like SMU I imagine, that were on the bubble.

well i thought raleigh was a bit closer to hattiesburg than it actually is.. 790 miles. but again two state schools playing each and although ncsu stinks this year they still have a huge alumni base who travel b/c thats what bcs conf fans do.. they travel.. so that is not a valid comparison..

NCSU had less than 1000 fans at USM

Postby Sam I Am » Tue Sep 19, 2006 10:41 pm

NCSU could not have had more than 1000 fans at the USM game. I was there. The golden eagles had 30K dressed in gold shirts fill most of the stadium. Granted they are a state school with 15K enrollment. The game's gate appeal was playing against a BCS school that had beaten them last year in Raleigh. USM has won four CUSA titles and that has helped build fan support. Note SHSU is a state school and has 15K enrollment too. The problem though was the SMU portion of the home gate. Maybe the next game will be better.
