1986 Spring Game Alums vs. Mustangs

Postby carolina stang » Mon Sep 18, 2006 7:48 pm

I visited my parents near Dallas about three weeks ago and looked through some of my old stuff. I found two pamphlets regarding SMU. One was about the 1986 spring game when SMU football stars of the past took on the 86 team. Then there was also a season ticket guide with Jeff Atkins on the cover for our last team pre DP 1986.

That spring game may have already been rehashed here many times, but I was curious if anyone has any specific remembrances of it. I was living in Tyler at the time and couldn't make it up for the game. I had graduated from SMU 4 years earlier. My first thought when I heard about it was that someone might get killed. But I'm sure the rules were modified a little maybe. I'll try to do a digital picture of each and post them here later if someone hasn't already.

They did put the McIllhennys, Lance, Lott and Don, all in the backfield at one time. Don got the handoff and was buried behind the line of scrimmage.

Also I got to meet Hacksaw Duggan that day. That was not long after the local wrestling promotion that Fritz Von Erich ran had folded, and Duggan went to WWF.

There werent many rule changes, if I remember correctly the only ones were on special teams. You couldnt return kicks, punts had to be fair caught, and kickoffs automatically came out to the 20. Thats all I remember.
Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.

I remember all the pro's from recent teams in their pro jerseys on the sideline. It was a great day to bond the past with the present.
