Man he is tall.
Good to see him there and he was asked about recruits coming to campus this weekend. Non for the Ark. St. game other than local kids.
Phil looked way better than last week.
He got some good questions from the crowd about the Offense and play calling. He is a upset with the 2-3 D for giving up points.
He wants to come out and punch Ark St. in the mouth in the first quarter.
WE ALL DO.

He should have had the same attitude when he gave up on his team at Tech! He lost his team the next week and lost me... and several others! TCU and UTEP didn't have this attiude!

So did Doh ask Coach Phil any hard questions such as when can we expect to be a top 25 team in football?

I think the two of them should pose a friendly wager...as to who fields the first top 25 team. Something like if it's football, Coach D grows a mustache; if it's bball, PB shaves his

Any word from the practice field? BUS; have you had a chance to see any practices? By the by, I really enjoyed meeting you, BUS, this last weekend. Hope to see you again later this year.

No I think MrExcitement1968 and the rest of the Doherty lurkers ought to do a big, loud cheer for good ole SMU everytime they see Doherty That way he would know that you are "Fired-Up" for BB season. That would be swell.

Gee, we have more smack talk between our own fans than we do with opponents' fans. Maybe one fine Saturday before a game we can have a Ponfans.com food fight on the boulevard. Only Pony fans can participate.

Did anyone ask Bennett about the stupid swinging gate on punts? I don't remember them doing that last year. What is the reasoning for it this year? The team will never have the confidence to ever run a fake - we didn't run it once last year on extra points - so what is the point? All it does is set the table for a penalty or screw up. I hate that thing more than anything else we do, which means a lot. It is going to stick in my craw all year.

The theory is that you line up all the guys out wide, on the side so that the other team has to go line up in front of them. Then, if they don't, you abandon the punt and run the ball behind a wall of blockers over there. In addition, there's the possibility that if the other team does line up wide with the swinging gate and then scrambles back to the middle of the field with the line, they could line up in incorrect/disorganized fashion, thereby creating the possibility of a fake.
I'm with you, I don't like it much. It seems to me that until you're a dominant team, adding a wrinkle like that -- with so many moving parts and the chance to go wrong -- adds more risk than reward.

Didn't we actually run the non-kick action of the swinging gate at the Nevada game a few years back, and have it go horribly wrong? Didn't we also end up losing that game by the margin the extra point (or field goal) would have made?

Three games into the season, and we have yet to run the QB punt on 4th down.
With regards to the swinging gate on FG/XP's, I thought we did run it either last year or the year before as Duke Hassen the holder ran it in for 2 points.

To my knowledge, we ran it twice. Once, it was supposed to be called off but didn't and it failed miserably. The other time, it worked.
