My Game Observations

Postby davidsmu94 » Sat Sep 23, 2006 11:21 pm

Okay my wife gave me a kitchen pass to go so here is my two cents... which is probably about what it's worth.

Justin Willis- For the most part, I think he made smart decisions, I just wish he made those decisions a little faster. He hung around the pocket too long today, won't be able to do that next week. Arm is really limited, but hopefully his mind will compensate.

Ced.. Dorsey- Really good effort, Ced is a good football player, and did a great job.

James Mapps- Yeah the two fumbles, but his yardage in cleanup time was really impressive. I don't want this guy carrying the load every week, he looks like the perfect 3rd down back for us.

Offensive Line- Good, but not great performance. The line has improved quite alot from last year, but Arkansas State did get pressure too many times for my liking.

Kennedy- Probably his best game as a Mustang, great work

Bobby Chase- Was great today, his first catch was really good, and he had the big touchdown.

Givens & Sanders- Took a back seat for the most part today, but we are in good shape at WR next year.

Justin Rodgers- After a slow start, Justin looked like he found his game today, glad to see him play so well

Wilton McCray- Guy is 100% better than he was last year. Not afraid to put a helmet on someone

Carrigan- Nice hit on the goaline, I thought he played very well today

Devon Lowery- Touchdown, he gave away was really poor, I'd rather this guy didn't see the field unless it was a nickle situation

Jonathan Lindley- Solid game, had some really good breakups and layed the lumber on a couple of hits

Brian McCann- I'm really, really glad we have him, I think he's going to be a great corner

Special teams- I though our kickers were great today, probably as good as we have had it since DP

today what stuck out in my mind was the performance of the seniors, Chase, Kennedy, and Rodgers were all great today

Glad to hear the seniors stepped up. They have to if we have any chance at all of winning this year. As much as we [deleted] about Bennett, it is the seniors that have to lead. Next week is a real challenge for us. I would think that we could (and should) handle Tulane with ease. However, our recent weak sister efforts against this disaster team leaves one to question just how hungry our players are? Seems we feel so sorry for them that we are willing to take a complete and total week long vacation from football for them. Next week will be a test.

I was a little concerned about the pressure on Willis too.

Our O-Line better step it up and Willis better get ready to move against Tulane's D. They are fast, and he won't have too much time to look around before he's tasting carpet. LSU's O-Line had trouble at times holding them back.

i was fairly impressed with their size and athleticism last year. of course their season fell apart after Katrina, but they have some talent at tulane.

My version:

* Look for No. 89. Big Fella can catch, and good things happen when you get the ball to him.

* With Darrin Johnson in and out of the lineup, Chase Smith did a very good job pinch-hitting at left tackle.

* Wilton McCray is everywhere. For someone who's "too small," he sure makes a lot of tackles.

* Thomas Morstead is a double-barreled weapon: punts and placekicks ... and he's just a sophomore. I've never been a fan of a kicker before, but that long FG at the end of the half was absolutely pounded.

* Adrian Haywood and Justin Rogers are studs. Nice to see Rogers get a pair of sacks.

* Devin Lowery got out over the tips of his skis on the ASU touchdown, but that guy's going to be a good one.

* James Mapps doesn't make sense. He looks like he's 105 pounds soaking wet, but he doesn't take many direct hits. Hang on to the damn ball, and keep running hard.

* Justin Willis - what can you say? He looks like he's running a practice out there. When a guy gets near him, he takes just one step, just enough to get out of reach. It would be nice if he ran a 4.3 in the 40, but he seems to have that presence, that knack of being able to sidestep pressure just enough to create the time he needs to throw. Of course, he also is making great decisions with the ball - one of his best plays of the day, I thought, was in the first quarter ... deep in his own end, he looked downfield, didn't see anyone open, and tossed it out of bounds. It sounds simple, but a lot of freshmen who have had the success he's had this year would have tried to force a pass into heavy coverage. He didn't.

* Best offensive play calling in years. Keep it up.

* Bryan McCann will score on a return. This year.

Disagree on Lowery. I thought he really struggled out there, and McCann did a better job. Lowery was beaten on the TD and was almost beaten a couple of other times. He has the speed but has major, major issues judging the ball when it is in the air.

I thought there were big huge holes in our secondary all Nite long and that a good QB would have really torched us especially in the first half. This is still a very questionable secondary who are still breaking down pretty consistently.

There is no doubt about that. They are playing very loose and "bending" enough that they will "break" sooner or later. The key to our pass defense right now is being able to dominate up front and get a rush on the QB. If that can not be done we will have trouble. My remark on McCann was not meant to imply our secondary was top notch but rather that he as a true freshman shows the ability to become a true standout as he progresses.

If that's the case (I don't know, I only witnessed the SHSU game in person), then you might want to place your bet with Tulane. If you're playing roulette, put the big money down inside on #19.

Gambling is Illegal in the State of Texas. Seriously I don't gamble-seen to many gamble-a-holics. I truly only care if my team wins by 1-all those other points don't mean a damn.
