Nice pic of Morstead got me thinking

Postby SmooBoy » Fri Sep 29, 2006 8:13 am

How nice is it to have a real threat at kicker again this year (following McMurtray) after years and years of inconsistency? Much of the 90s and early 00s were spent going for it on fourth down any time we were farther out than the 20 yard line

Good luck Morstead with the kicks and punts (hope not too many of the latter) this weekend and the rest of the year.

But there's bad karma on that photo. I think that's the shot when he missed the extra point against North Texas.

Pony Pride, for the sake of taking the good vibe to N'awlins, please consider a change.

I really am impressed with this kid as a Punter-if he keeps improving I think we actually may have a legitimate pro prospect on our hands as opposed to the periennial taxi squad level talent-the number one reason being that he gets unusual height on his kicks. For example, Baylor has that Sepulvada kid from HP that won the Ray Guy Award-but he's a line drive kicker that the Pros hate. Morstad has hang time AND excellent distance. He also already has 4 kicks inside the 20 this year which is a nice weapon.

Which opens another topic - which of the current players have legitimate pro 'potential'? Kennedy, Bonds, McCann come to mind.

Bonds is still working on his first unassisted sack against Division 1A competition-he's not an NFL prospect. He doesn't have the quickness either required for the NFL. The only players on our entire team who might have a decent shot are Martin and Kennedy but only if he moves to the OLM-he's too slow to play TE in the NFL. I guess Darrin Johnson will get a look too. McCann is a freshman-nobody can fairly judge that right now.

McCann's a freshman, Morstead's a sophomore. Not much of a difference, in terms of pro prospects. If you can play, they'll find you.

Guys with at least an outside chance (if not more): Thomas Morstead, DeMyron Martin, Adrian Haywood, Darrin Johnson.

mccann is explosive, but way to early to say "he is a pro prospect"

I think Adrian Haywood will be on a 52 man roster next year (read: NOT on a practice squad). The guy doesn't even have an apartment around SMU because he lives in opponent's backfields.

What about Sturdivant? Any chance at making it to the next level?

I've always been impressed with his play.

I think Joey is a little undersized, however, some team will give him a look in camp.

sturdivant is one of my favorites - but think he has no chance. Too small, and not fast enought to make up for it.

agree with others - Kennedy and Haywood are it from seniors.

I think there is a difference between evaluating a position player and a kicker. I think Morstead is a camp invitee as it stands today. He booms it and it is a perfect spiral. He adds a little strength, who knows what happens.

Rogers will play at the next level as a linebacker.
