If you would have stuck a microphone in my face after the North Texas game I would have said alot worse.

What CJ said is true. I'm sure he would like to SMU become respectable again just as much as anybody on this board but it hasn't happened. I bet his comments were made out of frustration. I guess he could have not made any comments about the team but he did so get over it. He probably saw the core of the UNT game and was disgusted. I still am I will continue to be unless the Mustangs salvage a winning season.[/quote] I've read other comments by James in the past few years that shed more light on this topic. James would LOVE for SMU to have a great team. He is deeply frustrated that the school's athletic department hasn't figured out how to do that. For many years he has felt the athletic department was clueless. In his mind his fears were confirmed by the weak way his own son was recruited by his alma mater. I don't remember all the specifics, but I recall him being quoted in the DMN as saying something to the effect that the department didn't have a clue about recruiting. I believe his son got a postcard from SMU while dozens of other schools sent him tapes, DVD's, books, etc trying to get his interest in signing up to play football. James is entitled to his opinion and he's paid to express them on TV. It wouldn't be right for him to sugar-coat comments about his own school.

He said what many, many, many, many of you have been saying on this forum, at the bar, in your living room, on the golf course, in church for years!!! He speaks the truth.....
Difference is he's getting a hefty paycheck to say those things. We're not.
Overall, I wish that CJ, whom I so enjoyed reading about and a time two seeing when he was at SMU, had not said what he did, which I DID NOT HEAR FIRST HAND/. But unless Ordinii or someone as yet unknown makes some great difference that no one in twenty years or so has made, then I can't really gainsay his remarks as quoted.
IMO one big difference between him and any other alumni, fan, ex-player, supporter, whatever who makes the same comment is that he weekly sees other programs that are good, bad, going up, going down and talks to the coaches, players, supporters, and local sportswriters about the specifics that make it so. I am afraid that few are better placed to comment. I hope that the rest of this season and the next several prove CJ wrong.
For what its worth, I heard him talking about the Illinois victory later in the broadcast and he said Illinois was probably one of the worst teams in the nation, and then said well maybe North Carolina State. He did not mention SMU during the segment I heard. I am sure NC State fans are cussing him today also.
