Big summer has big names chasing after Doss' Brooks

Jeff Brooks started the summer buried on the college basketball recruiting radar, with only a handful of mid-major Division I schools interested in his skills.

But after a sensational summer on the AAU and camp circuit, the 6-foot-8 senior forward at Doss High School is one of the hottest recruits in the country.

"He's exploded," Doss coach Shawn Purlee said.

Brooks has gone from Mr. Unknown to saying calls from college coaches "just won't stop." He now has a number of NCAA Division I offers and this week made an unofficial visit to the University of Louisville. A trip is planned for next week to the University of Kentucky.

Brooks met with U of L coach Rick Pitino for several hours on Monday.

"It's all happened so quick," Brooks said. "I'm just trying to see what everybody has to say right now. It's a great experience for me."

Brooks, who transferred from Shawnee before his junior year, said North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, St. John's, Saint Joseph's, Georgia, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion and Marshall have offered him a scholarship.

Brooks already has set up an official visit next month to Virginia Tech but said he'll wait to decide where his other four visits will be. He said he likely won't sign until next spring.

"In a way, I want to get away from home a bit," Brooks said. "But I really don't know yet. Right now I'm just trying to see what everybody has to offer."

Brooks said his visit to U of L "went pretty well." He said he spoke with the coaching staff and attended a practice.

"The first time I met with (Pitino), we talked about my attitude," Brooks said. "He talked about how sometimes I looked down on myself, and (Monday) he talked with my dad about my attitude. It went good. I liked it a lot."

Brooks hopes an offer from U of L is coming, along with one from UK. He said he hasn't talked with the Wildcats much but is eager to go to Lexington.

"Maybe after a visit with me and after they get to know me they'll offer," Brooks said.

Brooks averaged 11 points per game as a junior. He won four MVP trophies during the Blue Chip Camp this summer and also won the MVP trophy at the Five-Star Camp. He also had good showings at camps in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Las Vegas and California.

Brooks was not ranked among the top recruits in the nation this summer but is expected to vault quite a bit when new rankings are released this fall.

"After Vegas and California, that's when it really blew up," Brooks said. "What I'm going through now is great. A lot of guys aren't even getting calls, and for me they won't stop."
