University Park/SMU Men's Basketball To Hold Free Kids Clinic On Oct. 28, 2006
Mustang Head Coach Matt Doherty To Host Event
Sept. 23, 2006
CLINIC REGISTRATION
On Saturday, October 28, University Park will formally open an out-door basketball court at Burleson Park. The court, with a weather-resistant concrete surface, and two regulation baskets, will be the newest amenity to the park which already boosts a baseball field, a practice soccer field, two lighted tennis courts, a playground area and picnic facilities. The park is located at 3000 University Blvd.
To mark the occasion, that morning, Matt Doherty, men's head basketball coach at SMU, will conduct a free basketball clinic from 9 to 11 a.m. The clinic will feature basic instruction, shooting and dribbling contests, and an autograph session.
Coach Doherty, who is a resident of University Park, approached the City about hosting a clinic shortly after plans to build the basketball court were made public. In commenting on the event, Mayor James "Blackie" Holmes, III said, "This is a great opportunity for kids to learn more about the game from one of the best college coaches in the country. Considering that the clinic will take place just two weeks before the start of SMU's season, I sincerely appreciate Matt's commitment of time and energy." Coach Doherty, who is in his first year with the Mustangs, has taken teams to eight NCAA Tournament berths during his 16-year coaching career. He spent last season as head coach at Florida Atlantic.
