Student HandbookWhen I was at SMU, we had a student handbook that laid out all of the various responses to 'bad bahavior.' Is there anything like that now that the school uses in a situation that has happened with JW? At the U of Louisville, where my son goes, it spells out pretty clearly what happens in the case of a physical altercation/harrassment. When there is no injury, both parties are brought into mediation, and a contract is spelled out setting up future expectations of behavior. If anything else were to happen, then more severe punishments come about. It seems to work pretty well at UL. Does anything like that exist at SMU to provide some guidlelines?
I am not sure, but I know when I was there they had the hanbook that gave similiar guidelines. Not sure about the levels, i always thought of it as something that should be handled case by case and if furthur incedents occur then, more stritch discipline may be in order.
good question if anyone has an answer!!? Sports, and all that implies.
Any type of altercation like Willis had is dealt within the SMU campus goes directly to the SMU PD and the Dean of Student Life.
In some cases, University Park PD can get involved if the matter is taken to court and charges are pressed. The SMU PD does a complete investigation and the people involved in the matter have meetings with the Dean or the asistant Dean. If charges are pressed, UP PD handles the matter and SMU PD gives them all the info they have.
If that is the case, then I suspect the two of them will be visitng with the dean of student life in the near future, if not already, and I imagine things will be cleared up soon (God willing)!
Wouldn't it involve the Dallas Police Department since the alleged assault took place on Sandhurst which is in DPD jurisdiction, not UPD's?
If it did take place in the Dallas County, then the matter could be handled by DPD.
Hopefully charges are not pressed and SMU PD will take care of all of this.
It doesn't have to be on campus to have it forwarded to the dean of student life (actually, the assistant dean) and dealt with in that office. All violations of the student code are handled in this manner. Any separate actions from UPD, DPS, etc are entirely different animals and are not a substitute for what the university does or will do. So I guess I just repeated what J.T saw earlier. I just wanted to point out that the violations of the student code and the consequences from any law enforcement agency are two entirely different things with both having to be dealt with. Hopefully, it ends with just the code violations.
To answer an earlier question, yes you can be disciplined for stalking and/or sexually harassing another student. This would be the first high profile "male to male" case that I am aware of but I've been out of school for several years so it could have happened since and I just didn't know as I've been gone. _____________________________________

Why would the DPS get involved? Does someone need to get a driver's license renewed? Or does someone need to wait in an enormously long line for some odd reason?
If it was off campus. . . what can the SMU police do? how is that in their jurisdiction?
Sports, and all that implies.
Umm... how did you figure? I was under the impression that it is a regular police department just specifically for SMU.
It is just a name. Look at the patch on the sleeve the next time you see one.
I did mean DPS as in SMU police...that's their name. And yes, they can get involved if an SMU student is involved in a violation of the student code, wherever it may be. You sign a document with smu (Student Code of Conduct) that allows the university to act in any instance where your behaviour is "unbecoming" as being an ambassador of the University and so on and so on. I know, I know...just the messenger here. Let the jokes fly...
