SMU Sports Medicine

Postby mustang24 » Mon Oct 09, 2006 5:42 pm

When watching SMU this year, I noticed that something has been missing. Certain players have come and gone along with coaches but one constant was Cash Birdwell. As most mustang fans know, Cash has been the athletic trainer for 30 some years covering football. He retired last year with a great ceremony and great victory over UTEP.

Having said that, I have been doing some research on the new football athletic trainer, Mike Morton. He has been under Cash for a few years prior to his retirement but Mike brings a great enthusiasm to the football program from what I have seen on the sidelines. I read that he went to Purdue and then Aurburn University. Now I don't know what sports he worked but I am sure that he was around football at some point the way he takes care of our team. I spoke to some of the players and they have nothing but high regards for him and his intensity that he brings to getting people healthy.

Does anyone have anymore info on the man that had to replace a legend? It sounds like he is doing a great job!!!!

Mike is awesome. Very likable and funny. Cash was great, but what a hard a%$!! I think that Mike will do a great job getting the guys healthy and back on the field where they belong, helping the Stangs win games!!!

One thing I know Cash did, that I am not sure Mike does or not. Keep players out of the training room. That room is like a virus, once it infects one player it can start to get to them all!
Sports, and all that implies.

Mike does his absolute best with the players. He makes sure that they do all their Rehabs and that they are progressing well.

He is a terrific replacement for Casher and does an outstanding Job in the training room. He makes sure that the players follow all the rules of the training room and I wish him continued success.

Thanks for all the great work that you have done so far Mike.
