winning alone doesn't always fill seats. what was the avg home attendance for SMU in 1982? 35,000 maybe? there are too many options in dallas to depend on a decent football team to fill seats. i know people who are fans of certain schools ONLY because they went to games as a kid. TO SOME EXTENT, THIS IS ABOUT TRYING TO TURN SMU INTO DALLAS' TEAM. we'll probably never win over the guy who went to UT, gets Mavs, Stars & Cowboys tix for free but what about the people who can't afford the $200 for good seats & concessions for the family at a Cowboys' game?

My point about "only" having 35,000 back in the glory days was that 35,000's a weak number with the incredible team SMU had back then meaning winning doesn't really guarantee people will go to SMU games. Effective marketing combined with a decent team can bring teams. To do it SMU's going to have to try to become Dallas' team (for those who say that can't happen, substitute Richardson's team, Forney's team, Mesquite's team).
I'm not merely saying this crap to have an academic discussion, I think SMU could do get 30,000 people/game or so doing this and more if we had a consistent bowl team.

I note that you are new to the board and welcome. But you are preaching to the choir a subject we have hashed and rehashed for years. I think we all pretty well agree that better marketing in the mode of Mustang Mania is needed. Keep fighting the fight but right now we just have to hope that Orsini will bring in the right type of blood to get something done.
