ATTENTION: SMU LAWYERS thread

Postby PonyPride » Mon Oct 09, 2006 9:30 pm

There is nothing funny about this entire situation. Jokes will be monitored and deleted, as might some who post them. This is a serious situation that affects our school, our school's athletic department and the lives of several students. Please be sensitive to that.
Thank you for understanding and cooperating.

My original post was not meant in jest. If anyone was offended by it, I apologize. I asked it in all seriousness because this is a damn serious situation.

Yes this is serious but now it is personal and Justin's parents will pull together and figure out a strategy. Obvious SMU personnel do not want to take it on.

Since nobody else feels like answering, I will. The first thing I do is not listen to a lawyer. You can "lawyer up," and the lawyer will tell you to not say anything. Personally, I think the chances of anything coming of the criminal complaint is negligible. The real risk, IMO, here is to Willis' reputation. Willis and his dad are doing the best they can fighting on that front.

Now the the other lawyers can jump on me and tell me I am an idiot. Fine. But before I was a lawyer, I was in politics and advertising and radio. I tend to look at things more from a PR perspective.

OK great, we have a "lawyer's" thread. So what is the legal situation and next step? Or PR step? Who is helping Willis on this? No one? :?

Willis and his dad seem to be doing just fine without any help. That is, if they are not getting any help.

Edit: Why on earth is this a sticky?

J-Will is letting due process by the university take its course. He will know through that process if legal action on his part is needed. J-Will has all the confidence in the processes of the Univeristy. Does he trust the individuals in the process??? Humans make mistakes, and believe me mistakes have been made from Orsini all the way down to J-Will.
What if this student would have been doing this same thing to Turner, Orsini, or Bennett??? J-Will is important to someone as well.

Everyone needs to learn from this unfortunate situation.

1. Gather all pertinent info to the situation before you make a knee jerk decision.
2. Call everyone of importance and get them on the phone or back to Dallas and make sure we a making the right decision.
3. Do not take the law into your own hands. Charges have not been filed!!
4. What students can say to each other or post on web sites should be monitored by officials.

I wish the best for J-Will, Beard and the University.

For someone who obviously knows some (or all?) of the parties involved, that was a really thoughtful, level-headed post. I echo your sentiment of wishing the best for SMU, Willis and Beard.

You must be kidding. How do you propose they do that? If it's on a website that's already going to hard enough to find, but do you want SMU PD to have dozens of computer geeks who are sealed in a room sifting through websites for what SMU students are saying to each other. Also, I believe tracking what students say to each other that is not legal. It's only legal if it's left in public domain (i.e. a website).

Now I'm not saying that SMU PD could not/should not have done anything, but your suggestion is completely out of the question, and quite frankly I don't want MY privacy invaded like that. If I have a stalker issue, I would print out the said conversations and take them to SMU PD.

If SMU PD is hiring full time employees to read ponyfans, I'd like to submit my resume.
