Cowbell of Happiness

Postby rjhiii » Tue Oct 10, 2006 10:46 am

I am fortunate enough to be a banker, so I had yesterday off. Spent most of the day putting together cowbells (pulling off barcode stickers and putting on pony stickers).

I fully expect to hand out another 100 bells (and of course another 100 Jell-O shots 8) ). Please, please, please tell all of your friends to come by. Heck, come by and take a couple and hand them out around you in the stands.

I will be even easier than normal to spot on Saturday. On top of the red and blue suburban and candalabras, I will be wearing my custom made red "more cowbell" t-shirt. Problem is I am pretty sure my wife is now completely embarassed to be seen with me at the game.

Oh, and as an aside, I think the Willis thing is complete crap, but it appears from the UTEP game that we have a servicable backup. Since this is a team sport and only one player was suspended, I will continue to ring my cowbell and pray for a bowl game.

This is what we want at Ford Stadium!

Thanks "rjhiii" for your contribution to making Ford Stadium
what it should be and eventually will be!

Cowbells will ring in Mountaineer ears
Monday October 02, 2006
Daily Mail sportswriter

MORGANTOWN -- Here is some advice for West Virginia football fans
who plan to make the trip to Mississippi State: Pack a pair of ear plugs.
Unless, of course, you enjoy the sound of more than 50,000 cowbells
ringing for three and a half hours.

That is what the fourth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (4-0) will hear
when they visit the unranked Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-4) on Saturday
at 2:30 p.m. at 55,082-seat Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Miss.

WVU Coach Rich Rodriguez watched the season opener between
Southeastern Conference members South Carolina and Mississippi
State, and "it seemed extremely loud," he said.

Rodriguez also knows firsthand how loud the cowbells can be.
Clemson played Mississippi State in the Peach Bowl at the Georgia
Dome in 1999, his first year as the Tigers' offensive coordinator.

"You can imagine what 30,000 cowbells in that dome sound like
," Rodriguez said. "I think all 30,000 were back in our hotel
that night after the game (a 17-7 Mississippi State win) and
(they were) still ringing them. It can be very, very loud.
What you do is, you hope your guys make enough plays to keep
the crowd out of it, particularly early."

WVU was idle last week after a 27-10 win over unranked
East Carolina two weeks ago. Mississippi State is coming off a
48-17 loss to ninth-ranked Louisiana State.

The non-conference game between the Mountaineers and Bulldogs
won't be televised, which disappoints Rodriguez.

"I was hoping (the game) would be televised," he said. "Obviously,
we can't invite recruits to (Mississippi State) because it's their home
game.

That was one of the reasons we wanted to schedule an SEC
team in the South and have a visible presence.

Maybe some of their recruits (will) be interested in us if they
come to the game."

MSU plays a little different competition than we do. Extra noise from your fans can only help so much. There is no making up for a huge gap in talent.

In SMU's case, we are very close to turning the corner, and any home field advantage we can give our boys is a benefit. Right now there really isn't a home advantage because the standard "I am too important to yell so I will do a golf clap" mentality doesn't exactly create alot of noise.

Sooo, instead of being completely negative about it, I went out and found something that 10,000 people could use to create enough sound to at least possibly create an advantage for SMU. I will admit that the idea came from watching an MSU game.

As fans we can only do so much to help out the players on the field. Making enough noise to distract/annoy the other team is one of them. If you don't believe this, tell me again why A&M, Tennessee, Florida, etc. are considered such hard places to play...

Oh, and since I am talking about this, if you are one of the people who think cowbells are too loud, I would like to steer you towards our tennis or golf teams - they may be a little more your speed.

Here is an interesting question about cowbells:

If I were to supply the band, dance team and cheerleaders with bells, would they be able to ring them at any time during the game?

I would think so, but I am sure as they are SMU sponsered that they would have to clear it with the admin. but then again I am sure they did not clear the "Diamond M" in the middle of that other schools field either!

That is still the best prank ever pulled on a school, mostly harmless, although it did cost TCU a lot of money to get that grass out of their field  but the fact that no one knew they did it until Spring, was just priceless !

There was a picture of that in the DMN when it happened. I wish I could find it now.
