Arkansas Trick Play

Postby SMU Football Blog » Thu Oct 12, 2006 9:56 am

Did anybody see the trick play Arkansas ran? There is a clip of it here (scroll down):

I took one look and thought "I'd like to see Blake Warren do that."

Brilliant! Although I could see a fumble on the snap or tripping while trying to get up and go. But still brilliant.

I looked it up, Blake Warren and Reggie Fish (the Arkansas player) are the same height, so it could work if our linemen are tall enough.

This play is called either "Woody" (dunno why) or the "Fish-bone." SOme call it "Crouching Tiger Hidden Fish."

That's awesome.
Flea could pull that off.
So could Jessie Henderson.

I giggled a lot when I saw that last week. Houston Nutt's got a few tricks up his sleeve after all.

My HS coach installed a somewhat similar play for the state championship game in 1988. It was the same concept, but the ball carrier did not actually “hide” from the defense like the Arkansas player did. In his version the back just lined up very close and directly behind the right guard. We ran it for a decent gain, but the RB did not have the patience to wait long enough to allow the defense to pursue the fake and take themselves completely out of the way. The Arkansas guy left too early also. If you watch the replay, he may not have had to deal with the linebacker that forced him wide to the sideline if he had waited perhaps one more second.

Our coach kept yelling at the RB to “count to 5” before running after getting the ball. I assume he picked 5 because he knew that any player would count much faster in the game. He should have told him to count to 10. Great play.

It was a great version of the fumble rooski. I sure hope we can pull some trick plays out of our playbook like the one Nutt used.

If we do, I'll bet it starts out with us in a swinging gate, with Sanders all alone, crouching behind the center.
