How exactly did Marshall get the ball back after the face mask call on the punt? Did it happen before the punt took place? That is the only reason that Marshall should have received the ball back, and from what I saw, I am not sure that is what happened.

it took place as the ball was in the air...but I still don't understand that maybe I should refer back to my book Being A NCAA Ref 101

The explanation given in the pressbox: the infraction occurred before the punt, thereby giving giving Marshall an automatic first down.

If it took place while the ball was in the air then it should've been SMU's ball.

Don't get that one at all.

Usually it takes about 1.8 seconds to get a punt off. That is a seriously quick personal-foul facemask.

That call was just as bad as the horrible mark on the 30 yd line after a critical Marshall 3rd down. Receiver clearly came back to the ball (on 29) but the Line Judge was clueless. I thought we were back in W.Va

They were giving them good spots on the ball the entire game, but that was seriously the worst. Not only did they move the ball further than where he actually received the ball at first, but when they brought the chains out to measure, they moved it another foot or two forward.

CUSA officials may be the absolute worse in the country. It seems they find a way to get it wrong regardless of which teams are playing. CUSA would do well to scour the depths of minor league arena football to find some competent officials.

The facemask happened before the punt, so Marshall kept the ball. Our guy on the outside grabbed their gunner by the facemask as soon as he came off the line (at least that was the call).

The officials did make a few mistakes yesterday, but compared to seasons past I think they weren't that bad. At home games over the last ten years (I've only missed 1) it seemed like we always came out on the short end of the stick and that sometimes we were getting beat with the stick. The halo violation was their favorite, and I am so thankful that rule is gone.
