Some love for Rusty BurnsAfter months of bashing the guy it looks like his system really works. I know a good QB makes a huge difference but I love the offense this year. The "pistol" has been working great and we are really unpredictable in what we are going to run. I knew Rusty was a great OC when he came from Cinci and it is finally showing. We are lighting up the scoreboard. After all that complaining, I think our system is one of the best in the country, give some love to Coach Burns.
Agreed -- we owe him an apology. I won't badmouth the past QBs, but with Willis running it, this is a FAR more entertaining offense. That play where Sledge took the ball and threw (lateraled) it back to Willis (who I thought would then throw it into the end zone) was great, even if it only produced a few yards on the Willis run. He really has opened up the playbook, and it seems he's got a lot of good ideas in there.
Slice up the ECU defense, Coach Burns!
Looked like Bennett got into Burns' face on the sideline in the second half after we failed to convert two straight short yardage plays and gave the ball up on downs. Not having Martin really hurt. Other than that I thought the offense looked pretty good.
Head coaches challenge their assistants during games all the time. If your name isn't Bobby Bowden, it's going to look heated/intense at times. Coach Bennett is a fiery, passionate guy, and I wouldn't read anything into it. He has been singing the praises of Coach Burns and the offensive staff all year.
Phil should have kicked the field goal. Even my 8 year old who wants to go for it all the time wanted to kick the field goal. He then told me that the Tulane coach was stupid for trying the fake punt as well. It may be that he is getting the hang of the finer points of the game. Class of '91
I am surprised Burns is on the sidelines during games...I naturally assumed he would be in the press box so as to get a better view of how plays are developing and what defensive schemes the opponent is using.
OCs are typically in the box...wonder why Burns isn't.... Let me explain something to you. I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me.
I have no problem with Burns on the sideline. Do all of you that are screamng realize that there is somebody in the box looking down? It is not like we are flying blind. He likes to be able to talk face to face with his QB and offense during the game. As long as someone is up there to see what is going on and what is available and can relay it to him I do not have a problem with this. As a matter of fact, I kind of like the idea that he is very "hands on" with the offense.
He doubles as qb coach so he feels he needs to be there with Willis and Slater. I know most OCs are in the booth but look at guys like Mike Leach, Spurier and a long list of NFL coaches who call plays from the sidelines. Bennett/Gush are both on the sidelines calling the defense too. I believe they feel like they can get better feedback by being down there with the players.
I had no problem with him going for it on 4th down. What I did have a problem with were the calls. We were running the ball fairly well up the middle, and their D-line was getting gassed (remember this was the end of a 10-12 play drive). Line up in the pistol/I or whatever, get a Kennedy on lead block and get the 1 yard. But kudos to the coaches for showing faith in the offense and being aggressive.
who's screaming? I just think it is a curious choice thats all. The majority of OCs (high school, NCAA, pro) are in the box, and it is not like our team has been an offensive juggernaut the past few years. Until Willia arrived, we were as stagnant as it gets. Really...there are coaches looking down from the booth? I thought certainly because Burns was on the sideline that they must be "flying blind"...C'mon man, I am no idiot....OBVIOUSLY someone is the booth communicating with Burns...but calling plays is one adjustment after another after another after another during the entire game, and in my opinion the offensive coordinator is better equipped and better qualified and better served to analyze the defense himself and get a feel for the trends and flows of the game himself than by getting reads from an assistant coach over a headset. The OC is the person that is deemed the "offensive mastermind" of any program. I just think it is better to have the OC looking down from the press box and making reads, adjustments, and judgment calls himself as opposed to some Wide Receivers coach radioing his analysis down to him. Let me explain something to you. I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me.
I wondered about that call. Was it a matter of allowing the offense that wanted to go for it have their way or was it that the coaches had a play they thought would work?
![]() Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
kicking the field goal would have allowed for a game winning FG had it come down to that - bennett's decision took that away.
