There is no "Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda" for this team. None at all. We are where we are, as Blog pointed out, enjoying our best start in 20 years. It's where we go from here not what might have been... if we had a losing record at this point, than sure - the shoulda, coulda, wouldas would be a nice way to lift our spirits... but let's focus on the future. The game at hand.
Bennett has been preaching to his players - one week at a time. We are 4-3, and every game since UNT has been fun, exciting, and entertaining. Let's look to ECU. We're no favored, we're on their turf, we are supposed to be their sacrifical homecoming victim. Let's go up there and take it. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
double true
mrydel, I agree 100 %. Let's hope the only rebuilding program we are in for the long term future is the one we are in now with Bennett. Good seeing you Saturday. Hope to see you at the UAB game.
What do you mean? Are you saying we should have lost to NTSU like we did? Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
If the restrictions are truly wrong, there are a ton of coaches that would come here. I think 7-5 saves his job considering he prob wins UTEP with Willis. 8-4 ensures it. 6-6 and he is gone.
For PB, its either a BOWL GAME or BUST.
Punch a ticket to a bowl game and he stays. Early offseason and he is GONE.
Re: Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda...
__________________ I'm sorry BR, please explain how SMU (if possible) goes 7-5 & does not get a bid??? No way 5 'other' C-usa teams go 7-5 this season. With the bowl contracts with C-usa, how do you go 7-5 & get left out? YOU WANT THE TRUTH? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Just beat ECU (injury plagued), UAB (not good) and Rice (probably the hardest of the 3) and let's go to a bowl...easy as that.
Houston and Tulsa at home adds to the mix.
Re: Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda...
First of all, I'm not saying it's likely that if we go 7-5, there is a good chance we won't go to a bowl game. But, it certainly is possible. There is a good chance USM, UAB, Tulsa, UTEP, and Houston could all go at least 7-5, in which case SMU could get left out. Additionally, there is also the possibility, as some others have pointed out, that someone like a UAB (who we may beat) might get selected above us simply because of the location of the bowl game. Finally, this is SMU, remember. Anything that can go wrong, usually WILL go wrong. Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
BRStang,
Not to split hairs, but the "shoulda" win was UTEP. Our QB shoulda been home for curfew, and if he was, we woulda be undefeated in conference right now! ![]() The coulda was UNT. Play that game again and we win 8 outta 10. East Carolina is winnable. UAB isn't good, so as long as we don't pull another UNT, we should get a treat on Halloween. Houston for Homecoming is a HUGE game in my opinion. We beat them last year in their house, but most still consider Cougar High the better team. Win that, and we may be back in the division race. I went to Tulsa last year, and I think the consensus of the 5 of us who went was that the Mustangs shoulda won that game but for a couple of calls that went the other way. But last year we still seemed to be plagued off and on by our legendarily bad luck. But in any event, I think we have the potential to be a better team this year than last, so I believe Tulsa to be VERY winnable. IMHO, they won the conference title last year because of a very mediocre CUSA West and your Ponies knocking out UTEP. Then the season ends against Rice – also very winnable. So I'm hoping for 4 more wins, including a victory against Tulsa to cloud the CUSA West division picture.
I mean... we've had years of failure. UNT was a reminder of that failure. We just need to move on and look forward. I don't see any reason this team couldn't run the table. Not saying they will, but at this point all we need is a loos by UTEP (hopefully to Tulsa) and for us to run the table and we're going to the conference championship. Not saying that we will... but that's why there is no woulda, coulda, shoulda... let's just go out and take it. We are where we are now and our destiny is in our hands (for the most part). The thing is that no way at all we would be playing for a national championship this season - so woulda, coulda, shoulda is out on that.... we can be and are playing for a conference championship first, and a bowl bid second. Both of those are in our sights. Let's just go out and beat ECU. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
Still looks like the NTSU loss will be the "Shoulda", and the UTEP loss may be the "Coulda." Will the ECU loss be the "Woulda" (i.e., if we had been able to play certain injured/suspended players)?
And, now the stage moves closer toward a 6-6 NO BOWL GAME scenario. I'd love to know what's going on in Orsini's mind right now. Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
^^^ as would all SMU fans. Like last year, we're just not winning games we could have. We had ECU last year, we had Tulsa close and a few other games within a TD. This year, we should have beat UNT (thats why we scheduled them), if Willis was playing, we could have beat UTEP, and as for ECU, thats a tough call. Obviously the D and some questionable calling in the 3rd quarter did us in.
we shoulda won this game...
we coulda won this game... we woulda won this game... IF WE HAD SOMEONE STEP UP IN THE SECONDARY.
