Marketing SMU

Post by mrydel »

I googled Gerald J. Ford Stadium in hopes of gettng a list of do's and don'ts within the confines. I had read them once before but wanted to refresh my mind. As I googled I found numerous ticket sales sites most of which were selling tickets to the UAB and the University of Houston games against SMU at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Houston, Texas. That is absolutely amazing to me. It is not just one but several sites all of which list our football stadium as being in Houston. Surely we can get the name of the city right when things like this are posted.

That's not the only thing. At lunch I was looking at my Entertainment coupon book and the SMU coupon inside. By the way, you can find a buy one get one free for most SMU sports in there. I think this is a great idea, but on the back of the coupon it says, "All regularly scheduled games played at the Cotton Bowl." No wonder we don't have fans. They're all showing up at the wrong stadium.

Are you sure that is not your 1970 Entertainment Book?

I hope you've emailed those ticket sales sites and informed them of their error.

No wonder Orisini cleaned house in the marketing department!

I think those commercials with the monkeys in the office are based on our marketing department.

Great stuff, guys. While I will be the first to rip the marketing group, this stuff is classic ponyfans.com. I know those people and they work very hard with little resources. Orsini did not clean house in the marketing department. Didn't some people leave for other jobs? The answer is yes. Any suggestions that you have may be sent directly to them.

For goodness sakes, get the facts before you criticize people.

Whoever it is that put this stuff out for SMU games needs to get a lesson in proofreading or they won't have ANY job. I'm sure if they make mistakes like that, they probably have more issues of the same.

The only fact I said was that on several ticket sales sights it refers to Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Houston, Texas. If you are going to critcize put away the broad brush of defensiveness and offer solutions to problems rather than excuses for inefficent work. I doubt very seriously that the problem I found has anything to do with the marketing department, but your rush to defend almost makes me believe the mistake was yours. By the way, if it was our marketing resources, please explain how much of a donation it will take to tell them what city our football stadium is in and I will mail the check today.

On page 10CC of the Sunday, Oct. 15 Dallas Morning News there is a full-page advertisement by Tom Thumb for its 'Breakfast with a Champion' featuring Don Shula.

The photo was taken on the field at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. There are representatives of Tom Thumb and the other sponsors of this event in the photo including children since the event is a charity to prevent premature births.

Please take a close look at this advertisement.

No where in it is SMU represented! The children are wearing t-shirts and cheerleader outfits for Texas A&M University! The billboard in the background does not say anything about SMU! There is nothing to indicate that this is anywhere on the SMU campus in Dallas, Texas. This is just wrong!

Do you think Texas A&M University would allow a photo to be taken at Kyle Field with people wearing SMU (or any other school's) attire? Do you think the University of Texas would allow a photo to be taken on Jamail Field at Darrel K. Royal -Memorial Stadium with people wearing SMU (or any other school's) attire? Do you think Texas Tech University would allow a photo to be taken at Jones SBC Stadium with people wearing SMU (or any other school's) attire?

Of course not.

SMU needs to be the same way. If SMU is going to allow corporations with lots of money to use its facilities to promote their events, charities, companies, etc. then SMU needs to have better control.

It's all about image and marketing.

Someone in the SMU Marketing Department dropped the ball on this and needs to be held accountable. If SMU is going to be a Top 25 team in all of its sports - as AD Steve Orsini has publicly stated - then it's time to start acting like it!
