To paraphrase Bill Simmons, if SMU goes to a bowl game, then SMU becomes just another football and no longer that team that hasn't won since it got the death penalty all those years ago. It will be a big psychological lift for the remaining fan base.

I think I would like that better than a bowl game (although one follows the other)

We only better our bowl positioning by winning the CUSA crown. Anything less than the CUSA crown means lower, pre xmas day, bowl games like the NO Bowl or the FW Bowl.
6 wins is good enough if you are a BCS conference team but when you play in lower, non BCS conferences, 6 wins will not always cut it for a bowl bid. There has been atleast 1 or more teams every year that go over .500 and win 6 games and STILL get left out of a bowl game.
Lets win 7 games and WAIT until the UAB game to start talking about a real chance at going bowling.

I am all about the "championship game", that is really what this program needs, not another / extra 30 days of practice. Extra practice simply means we are once again in the "next year" mode.....it is not a stretch to think we can win the rest of our games, or at least 4 out of 5. 8-4+, quasi cool bowl game and or C-USA championship is what needs to happen....

Blog, is this a recent Simmons article? I generally read his columns and would love to see him writing about us for some odd reason. Thanks.

I have been to NO 10x, and really have no desire to go there now, especially with all the BS going on there now...throw ASU into the mix, and it really does become a "been there done that" scenario.
Honestly, I am having somewhat of a diffucult time getting all charged up about being 6-6 / 7-5 and going to "any" minor bowl. For crying out loud, as Stallion outlined yesterday, we have defeated the #'s 101 / 107 / 112 / 98th ranked teams in the NCAA pool. My position is this......we need to be playing for the C-USA Championship, or finish 8-4 for me to get all giddy. Actually, finishing 8-4 and playing for the C-USA crown are probably the same thing......now THAT'S something to get fired up about.
We need to think big. The 6-6 New Orleans Bowl RAH RAH talk is disappointing to me.......FINISH 8-4 boys!!!
then dont go

If SMU is playing a bowl game in Beirut... I'm there. If SMU is playing a bowl game in Port-au-Prince I'm there, if SMU is playing a bowl game in Tehran I'm there, if SMU is playing a bowl game in P'yongyang I am there.
If SMU plays a bowl game in Fort Worth, however.... just kidding.
The only thing I have to say is that the only opponent I would like to play again in a Bowl Game scenario would be Tech.

He was writing about the Red Sox winning the World Series, and how they became just another team.

Hence "to paraphrase".

I said this before. If we end up 7-5 that is no sure thing. I believe back in 1999 or 2000 Kim Helton of UofH Cougars went 7-4 and Ken Hatfield's Rice Owls went 7-4 in the same year and neither got a bowl bid. I could be wrong on the records, but I am pretty sure they both had seven wins. The field must have been pretty good that year.
I think we have to win four of the next five to end up at 8-4 and get a bowl game. Our two toughest games are going to be against Houston and Tulsa. I just hope we beat Rice in Houston. It would be the first time we have won at Rice since 1986. Before last year's victory over UofH in Houston, we had not won on Houston soil since 1986. SMU has to take care of business and that means 8 wins.
Also, SMU is very unique in the fact that it is tied in with the business community of Dallas. Other schools in our conference can't say that about themselves. Couldn't our close relationship with airlines headquartered in Dallas (American Airlines and Southwest) bring about some cost savings on air travel to a bowl game so the athletic department can be in the black on a bowl game.
We have to get to a bowl game first. Eight wins is the only way to get to a bowl game. Don't count on it at seven.

the bowl system is set up differently now...
with a 6-6 record the Mustangs will get to a bowl game, unless other teams do a full about face and there are more than six 6 win teams in C-USA...not likely
and with a 7-5 record the Mustangs are going bowling
