I love your idea, but why limit the show to just Coach Bennett and Coach Doh. If we produce our own show, we could include all sports and even just general happenings at SMU. Instead of following suit like all the other schools and call it the Phil Bennet Show, we could call it something like SMU Today (thats original isn't it). It could have segments from the administration, sports, greeks (scary), cheerleaders and even the band (had to get that in).
This isn't the SMU show, it's the Phil Bennett, and SMU Football Show.
Who would see the SMU Show in the listings, and tune in?
Maybe a few other people would check it out especially if we beat TCU
again next year, or went to a bowl game this year. I used to watch all
the SWC coaches shows on channel 11 every Sunday evening way back
when they were grouped together in a 4 or 5 hour block. Don't watch any
coaches shows now that the BIG SMELVE is here.

I have seen these shows and i was not impressed w/ any of them.. you did not answer a single one of my questions? i did not ask if about just watching, I asked specific questions... have you ever seen the studio that cost $2 million? along w/ the $3.5 million in equipment that used to be used at channel 8 here in dallas just 6 years ago? sounds like you are shooting from hip.. I am pretty sure you are older than me.. go to where the bookstore at umph lee used to be and you will see a fantastic journalism wing that has been added to the meadows department.. oh yah did I say it is a $5.5 million dollar tv studio..
Ironic that we have WFAA equipment on the Hilltop. Are you sure it didn't used to be at Channel 8 20 or so years ago?

OK, so strike a compromise: call it the Phil Bennett Show, or the Matt Doherty Show, and then add a segment at the end talking about swimming or soccer or golf, etc.
I nominate the PonyFans.com guys as hosts.

I'll even get the coach de jour to read a consecutive page as a regular segment on each show. Better than Cliff's notes.

You can use student technicians at our studio and have someone like Swain to interview the coach. You have the SID write the questions and give them to Bennett prior to the show. You could add a segment where Bennett introduces Schellas and talks about our #1 soccer program for five minutes. Big XII schools do that crud all the time.

Other coaches who have shows I have seen on TV in NEW YORK
O'Leary
Kragthorpe
Snyder
Skip Holtz
Interesting to note those last two schools did not let their 5-6 records of 2006 prevent them from putting themselves out there as being serious about football. They're not "worrying about the W-L columns" before trying to get their message out. ECU's show is a particularly crappy quality (and Holtz is boring as hell), but it proves the production doesn't really matter. The important thing is to get it out.
The tragedy to me is that you can say what you want about Bennett's coaching ability, but he would be a natural in this medium. I have seen all the above shows at some point and, without exception, they are all a snoozefest.

Just wanted to add that I noticed Tulsa is now shooting with two barrels. "Tulsa Sports Page" followed by "The Steve Kragthorpe Show," back to back, adds up to a FULL HOUR of national exposure for the Hurricane athletic dept. (Complete with a nationally broadcast humorous local commercial featuring a woman in an office trying to change a coffee filter while wearing one of those giant foam fingers with "Tulsa" on it.) Had Skip Holtz's show on in the background this morning too. I repeat-- Runnin with the Stangs is great fun and informative, but our media dept. needs to be more aggressive. Everybody else is.

I am ready, but the AD's office has not called yet. BTW, one of the weekly segments I am planning is where I read the week's SMU coverage in the Morning News, and give a nod to mr. pony and McClown. Come to think of it, there is so much coverage, I'll just have to read jtstang's summary thread entries instead.
Also, we will feature the co-ed of the week. This segment will have an interview, conducted by me of course, during the bikini shoot. I will find out who posed for Playboy.
The Knuckleheads will of course provide the theme music for the show. I'm thinking something along the lines of "Phil made Steve Kragthorpe Cry" for the opener, and a play on the closer from the Beverly Hillbillies at the end, inviting the faithful back next week.
We will have an in-studio poster of the week from ponyfans.com segment, sponsered by - who else- ponyfans.com. And in keeping with the overall theme of the show, we'll play the audio feed from Bennett's weekly press lunch.

I would be in favor of 80% of that. That's the scary part.
After the homecoming win over Tulsa in '04, we actually started writing a song called "Cedric Dorsey Get on your Horsey," but it ended up sounding so gay we literally burned the unfinished lyrics in an ashtray.

Jeez man, if gayness is the failure standard I'm surprised you made it past the title.
