It's painful to listen to SMU on the radio

Postby Big10Ponyfan » Mon Oct 23, 2006 9:16 am

I think Rich Phillips does a great job. I enjoy his call.

But Craig Swann is a total mess. He talks over Rich when Rich is trying to call plays, he complains about the officiating being against us on plays and he pounds the fist in the broadcast booth. Those antics ARE COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL!!

He's been doing this for six years, and it's as ridiculous now as it was when it first started.

There's a difference between being a homer and broadcasting a game from the SMU perspective.

If you want to listen to a great broadcast, listen to the University of Texas and Craig Way, Keith Moreland and Roger Wallace. They do it the right way.

With Swann, our broadcasts are always going to sound small time.

PonyPride, you and I have had this discussion before. And you and I will always be on opposite sides of the fence.

I can't stand Craig Way! Swann get's a little excited at times, but I love him and Rich!

As I stated during the game, the ECU guys were as fair and knowledgeable as any "homer" announcers I have heard.

You take the bad with the good. He iis a good homer, though.

First of all, there's no way I'm listening to the UT broadcast. However, I have been forced (at gunpoint) to listen to them in the past, and I've been in the booth when they've called games -- I'd rather hear Rich Phillips and Craig Swann read the periodic table of elements than hear Craig Way call a national championship game. Phillips and Swann are fantastic -- they play off one another very well, they paint a vivid picture of what's taking place on the field, and most importantly, they realize they are NOT more important than the game. They tell you what's happening, and they're entertaining, but they're not the "I LOVE THE SOUND OF MY OWN VOICE" guys that Way & Co. are. Craig Way, on the other hand, renews my dislike for UT every time I hear him. He's as bad as Dave (A&M) South and Brian (TCU) Estridge.

Hold on there. There is no way anyone rivals Dave South. South is ridiculous. Way is a complete professional every way. He gets excited but doesn't scream, bellyache or wave the pompons in the booth. And I listen to Texas games because I like the Longhorns.

Swann is a mess.

I know you like the Longhorns, and I'm hoping that one day you find some sort of an ointment to help cure that affliction.

But like the Horns or hate the Horns, Craig Way is absolutely in the South/Estridge group -- they're horrible. If there was a video element on the radio broadcast, I'm sure we'd see him surrounded in the booth by burnt (for this argument, we'll begrudgingly accept that that's a word) puke-colored pom-poms. Rich and Craig aren't as well known as Craig Way because they're younger and they broadcast to a much smaller audience, but they're infinitely better. You don't have to agree with me, but that's OK -- you've been wrong before.

I just couldn't believe he said he liked the late hit early in the game. That's one of those things you don't blurt out over the radio.

I have listened to SMU football for years (thanks to the Internet). I would like a bit more description of what exactly is happening on the field. Often, one hears there is a catch to the outside and he is run out of bounds for a 10 yard gain. On viewing a replay it turns out to be a quick out with a stiff arm to gain an extra 10 yards before the safety comes over. More detail helps build a mental picture of what is occurring on the field. Swann's "pathetic" call is usually a catch phrase for a penalty in a critical portion of the game and not actually a 'bad' call by the officials.

I've got to agree. As an"outsider", I think Rich Phillips does a very solid job but Swann is so far over the top it's embarassing. He's always screaming over the play-by-play. Nothing wrong with being a homer, but he goes beyond that IMHO. Good luck against UAB.

I'll have to side with PonyPride on this issue. I will note that from the sounds of the 1st quarter of the Marshall game (I was late getting to Ford), it seemed as if Swann had been told to tone down his homerism from the week before.

Some might not like to hear this, but I think Jimmy Christopher lended quite a bit of professionalism to the presentation. Not anything against our roving Mustang on the sidelines, but Christopher complimented the guys in the booth nicely.

Been told to tone it down? If the Marshall game was a toned-down version, I'd hate to think what it would be like at any other time. It's ridiculous.

Chemistry be damned. I listened to the ECU game from start to finish, and I would rather listen to someone dragging their fingernails down a chalkboard than listen to Swann blow hot air in the broadcast booth. His press credential should be stripped.
