This team #1 problem...

Postby BUS » Mon Oct 23, 2006 10:24 am

DB's and DS.

SMU gives at least one receiver a 10 to 12 yard cushion on any play. To top that off the DB will back up another two yard when the play starts. So, stop and 8, catch the ball, run a yard or two and, do it again.

WE never play man, ARE they just as slow as Christmas? OR are the coaches scared to put them in a better position?

I do not have the answer to fix this but it has been the way SMUY has BEEN BEAT. I have the answer for the other team I am afraid.

I am more concerned with the lac k of tackling on the short passes. If you are going to give up the short route you must tackle.

The problem with that goes back to what Bus said. The defender is 10' off the receiver when he catches the ball. The receiver turns around and takes one or 2 steps and has time to put a move on the defender and get by. Just look at our pass offense. When our receivers catch the ball there is a defender hanging on them almost always, and they are taken down immediately. Whether it is a one yard pass or a 20 yard pass, there is always a defender right there. That says a lot for Willis's accuracy but speaks even more poorly on our secondary.

I assume he means deep saftey. I explained this in another post, but we only have three corners ready to play. Lack of depth at that position means we can't play nickel. No nickel against a spread means you have to play zone, regardless of the speed of the CB, because you have LBs matched up against WR.

That is the most cogent explanation of the problem I have heard. That would have been a better excuse for PB than the one he gave. He would have been better off just saying "it is my fault, we did not prepare well." The "surprised" excuse is really weak.

It (depth in the secondary) also makes next season scarry, plus losing the entire DL.

yes a PR person needs to talk to PB about his truthfulness w/ the press..

BUS, I agree why don't we play man coverage.. it drives me nuts that we get a great pass rush on 1st and 2nd down and then we basically go into a prevent on 3rd and long.. I just don't get it.. McCann is a very gifted athlete, Lindley and Lowery??able, but Goode and Sturdivant are great safeties.. I don't see why we don't ever ever play bump and run coverage

Switching to bump and run or some change to the secondary is called for. Face it, we have a problem and the extra time the next two weeks may be better spent making adjustments than resting.

We had better beat UAB and Rice because I am not sure we can outscore Houston or Tulsa if we do not address our pass coverage.

I would rate Sturdivant as a very good run support safety. His speed hurts some on pass coverage. I have not seen anything to rate Goode as great.

Defensive Safety
as compared to Defensive Cornerback.

Something has to give.

If this was/is a problem we should have gotten some JUCO help. MORE JUCO help.

Next year we need two to three transfers to shore up some holes that I see for next year.

ECU scored their second touchdown on 3RD AND 17!!!! Our db's don't HIT people! They try and push them, or bump them out of bounds, or watch as someone else makes the tackle. Watch the all access show from last week, Devin Lowrey SAYS he is not a hitter! Those three picks he got last week, were because it was a bad throw, and he wasn't even close to his man!

What really struck me as BIZARRE was the segment on last week's Running with the Stangs with Devin Lowery.. he basically said he doesn't like to HIT people!

My jaw dropped at that one.. our DB's definitely aren't aggressive enough. We need DB's that want to knock the wind out of every offensive player they tackle. I think there is a serious morale problem in the secondary and the coaches are at fault for not bringing in JUCOs for depth to be able to run man packages... so now all these kids can do is watch as they are beaten on every play.. they are screwed.
