UTEP/Tulsa Line

Postby SMU Football Blog » Mon Oct 23, 2006 2:33 pm

Not that anybody cares, but I was shocked to see the UTEP/Tulsa Line.

Tulsa -15.

Jeebus... that's a "Hawaii [when they're good] on the road, yeah they're good but it's still Hawaii on the road" type line.

I guess El Paso is about as far out in the middle of nowhere as a Pacific island.

I know... that's why I used the Hawaii on the road analogy.

OK, then you realize that means Tulsa is favored by 15 points, right?

Yes I do... my point is that UTEP isn't a great team... but their a good team, and while Tulsa is a better team, I don't think that Tulsa is fifteen points better than UTEP. From a line/bettor's perspective you always pick Hawaii at home, and always take their opponent on the road. It's like doubling down on 11, you always do it.

So my point was, "Wow, that's a larger spread than I would have expected."

So if you're saying, "Wow, I can't believe that spread is so close," than I can understand the miscommunication... otherwise my point was missenterpreted. As in "How does UTEP lose that many points on the road?"... explainable for Hawaii, but not for UTEP, in this case.

....

BTW - We need UTEP to win that game if we have any hope of a conference championship. Yep, that was a sunshiner comment.

But, uh, I'd take Tulsa straight in that game.

UTEP is really not that good this season. Their defense is awful. They lost handily to New Mexico (who is 4-4 including losses against PORTLAND STATE, Wyoming and Airforce). They barely escaped us at home when our backup QB tossed 3 INTs. Just this past weekend UTEP was dominated on the road by UH, totaling a mere 236 yards and 17 points while UH scored 34. They just are not the team they were last season.

Given Tulsa's success its not a shocking opening line for anyone who has followed UTEP much this season. I do think better's will take UTEP heavily, causing that like to come down to around 10.5 by kickoff if I were guessing.

That line was set based on the assumption of where the money falls. I'm guessing the line will shrink before kickoff.

The line is deserved. Tulsa has a great pass defense and a good pass offense. They match up very well against UTEP, who can't run consistantly and can't stop the pass.

Unfortunately, it is the same reason why Tulsa will be heavily favored against us. The matchup is pretty bad.

Tulsa is not as good as advertised. They are good, but people mark them as great and it bugs me.

I do think that they will beat UTEP by at least 14. Tulsa's pass defense should have a field day with Palmer. Hell, our secondary held UTEP to 7 2nd half points on a trick play.

They aren't great but they are the only consistently good team in the entire conference. They have played well just about the entire year except against BYU. The fact they are the Pride of CUSA shows exactly how weak this conference is. Its really shocking how poor CUSA is this year. Never thought we'd be playing below the New WAC level.

tulsa will for sure cover 15 points at home vs utep. The oddsmakers know what they're doin. I've learned in the past two years they are the only people you don't question
