For some reason I had 9 in my mind but I know it was more than 5 which means it should be on the record chart, but is not. I think Gary threw them all but it was possible someone else came in and threw a couple. I also remember while in the press box watching the Arkansas field goal kicker lining up for a field goal which carried with the wind exceptionally far. Then the whole team ran onto the field to congratulate him. I thought that was a little over board for a 50 yard field goal and then realized it was from the 50 and was a 60 yarder which I think was a national record at the time.
Thank you. By the way. Gary was a very able QB who was put into a tough situation with a very cold strong wind and was playing from behind all day.
Bill McClard was the Arkansas All-American kicker who hit the 60 yarder. Arkansas ran off I believe about a 13 game winning streak that wasn't broken until the next trip to Fayetteville when Louie Kelcher had one of the greatest games in SMU History for a DT and SMU took it to Arkansas something like 22-7 which ended in a driving snow storm.
I was there, too. One of the coldest games I've ever sat through, too. Game started out with a mild temp and then a cold front came through (with the wind!) and it got downright c-o-l-d! ![]() Hated watching the Razorbacks stomp the Mustangs like that! The only enjoyable thing about that day in Fayetteville was having lunch at the A.Q. Chicken House beforehand. Great fried chicken and rolls!
yes i am biased but my dad, Jim Parr holds a record that will never be broken either.. He has the record for the 880 for the SWC... 1:49:20...
A) they stopped running the 880 in the 70's when track went to the metric system (but he broke the record in 1960) B) the greatness that is the SWC is dead
and another SMU record that can't ever be broken..
Lance McIlhenny's winning percentage record as a qb in the SWC conf i believe it was 35-4-1... i won't bet that ranch but i know that is close.. if another smu qb ever breaks that record whatever conf they are in.. then WOW.. but its a record that probably won't ever be broken..
We would need to really work on simplifying our OOC and improving our team. If TCU can achieve their record of last season then it is not totally out of consideration. But...with Willis' three loses this year he would have to go undefeated the rest of his career to hit that. So if not him it is at least another QB away.
Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Not only that but he or his successor would have to single-handedly reform the Southwest Conference in order to break that McIlhenny record.
Who is Gary Carter? I remember Hammond playing just about every position on the field that year, but I figured the 7 INTs were a combination of Hixson, Hammond and possibly Bobo (did Keith play that year?) Did we intercept an Arkansas QB named Carter 8 times in that game??? I don't remember much of that year. After all, it was the 70's
Gary Carter was number 2 QB behind Hixson. I do not remember where he played HS ball. Chuck was hurt and Carter started. Carter was tall, probably 6'2 or 3, 230 with a good arm. I do not remember what Chuck's injury was but he did not play. Gary Hammond did not play QB unitl his senior year. He All Conferenced at WR sophmore, RB junior and "athlete" his senior year. Another QB was all conference. Freshman were not allowed to play varsity ball during that era. I do not recall who threw the other interception.
